Guitarist Martin Shepherd, a recent regular at the Buckhurst Hill jam, has just launched Jazz Zone, a CD of self-penned tunes covering bebop and Latin styles plus an altered blues. The obvious tonal reference points are George Benson and Wes Montgomery. The improvisations are of a high standard - Martin has a light touch and plays through the changes well. Drums and percussion are programmed but sound convincing. One for the car? Martin is offering Jazz Zone to newsletter subscribers for just £6 including postage and packing and an information sheet - a 33% discount on the store price. For further information, e-mail Martin at mp.s...@virgin.net Those who wish to listen first should go to the MySpace home page and type martinshepherdguitar into the 'find members' box.

Julian's highly melodic music and unique sound reaches the younger audience, while his soul, original writing and phenomenal technique excites the jazz aficionados. www.martinguy.co.uk/ Martin Guy has had a long and varied career playing with far too many other musicians to list here and returns to Marigolds for what has become an annual event not to be missed.
10th Dec Bad Hair Day www.myspace.com/badhairdayuk www.badhairday.org.uk. John Edmonds guitar, Tony Myers guitar, Roger Woods drums and John Kaethner bass. Back at Marigolds after a fantastic 2009 gig Bad Hair Day come in two guises. As their website says they play powerful guitar based classic blues/rock albeit in their own indomitable style. But that's for the pubs where the audience is louder than the band. But for Blues Clubs where the audience listens to appreciate what is being played for them, just as happens at Marigolds, they play guitar based classic blues again albeit in their own indomitable style. Fronted by two experienced axe men in John and Tony you will have to go a long way to find many bands with two such fine and talented guitarists in the one band. None of their arrangements are set in stone and it is generally a case of seeing what happens on the night and it does generally happen. Don't miss what promises to be a great gig in the run up to Christmas.

Humphs fun filled and melodic approach to music was to be a huge influence. Through performing in his band Jo also recorded and worked with Acker Bilk and played alongside Tina May, Joe Temperley, Scott Hamilton, Elkie Brooks, and many others. Jo's other influences include Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gorden, Cannonball Addderley and Bill Evans. Her mellow tone is often compared to Stan getz and Zoot Simms. COURSES (Tutor David Price)
Sunday, 28th Nov 2010 - THE JAZZ SINGERS --A Jazz Appreciation Day. Featuring the charismatic MILLS BROTHERS who wowed all America (they had 69 best sellers) with their harmony singing and impersonations of jazz instruments. So good were these four vocalists at sounding like a jazz combo that their records had to contain the words:- "No musical instruments or mechanical devises used on this recording other than a guitar". Before MONA LISA, the velvet toned and ambidextrous NAT KING COLE was one of the most respected jazz pianist of his time. His father disapproved of jazz and Nat was seduced by a dancer, 8 years his senior. Both BILLIE HOLIDAY and her mother, who was only 13 years older than her famous daughter, had to resort to prostitution in the early hard days on Harlem streets. Billie had several husbands who each coaxed her into drugs, charging her exorbitant prices for heroin. She was nevertheless one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. Hear her life story, see her on DVD and listen to her Strange Fruit and many other great recordings. When ELLA FITZGERALD auditioned as a dancer in Harlem, she was so nervous that she sang instead and kick started a fabulous singing career which led her to legendary heights.

A great recording studio where Chris has just done some work which we would highly recommend for jazz and vocal recordings. Based in Reading unfortunately, but very reasonably priced (£125 per day for weekdays and £140 per day for weekends), with a producer who has got a great feel for the style as well as being incredibly friendly and helpful. He can do everything from a couple of live demos through to producing a fully mastered CD album. www.m4studios.co.uk - for more details call Craig on 07595 643680 or email enqu...@m4studios.co.uk
