Buster plays Buster hits the West End! Sunday 9th June 2:30pm matinee show at St James Theatre, 12 Palace Street, London SW1E 5JA only 5mins walk from Victoria train station. Tickets: £15.00 or £30.00 including Sunday Brunch (service from noon). Box office: tel 0844 264 2140. Jo Fooks - sax, Neil Casey - piano, Pete Ringrose - bass, Buster Birch - drums.

Since its debut in March 2011 Buster plays Buster has been delighting audiences with its magic and charm. One for all the family, young and old, jazz enthusiasts and otherwise have all thoroughly enjoyed this well produced show. A first class jazz quartet featuring musicians of the highest calibre performing live to a screening of the Buster Keaton classic silent movie "Sherlock Jr". The music is specifically arranged for the group, scored out and sync'd to the movie, but also features plenty of improvised solos from these great jazz musicians, which creates a cohesive work merging the two art forms in to a unique experience for the audience.

But don't take our word for it, here is a review from the recent show at The Brook Theatre by the respected jazz critic Chris Howes...
"This show is not just a surprise, it's a real treat. Let's face it, it's a treat to refer to a jazz performance as a 'show', in the formal sense. True, this did have the rare appeal of viewing a hilarious 1924 Buster Keaton silent film 'Sherlock Junior', but it's a sign of a wildly adventurous imagination to put it together with such a good bunch of jazz musicians. Step forward the show's creator: another Buster, the noted British drummer Buster Birch, whose quartet played for us while the film ran, though very far from the 1924 style. As the comic melodrama proceeded, the band adroitly accompanied each scene with well-chosen jazz tunes and popular songs - Killer Joe, Sidewinder, My one and only love, Salt Peanuts and so on. Buster Birch's well-knit band played with joy, spirit and some deft touches of musical humour. This audience loved it - I defy anyone not to."

A member of the British jazz elite, his pedigree is unrivalled. Drawing musical inspiration from Parker and Coltrane, he has a unique voice in jazz and is without doubt one of the most respected British musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. He has worked with such legends as Bud Powell, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Milt Jackson, Lalo Schifrin, Frank Foster's 'new' Count Basie Band and the Ray Charles Orchestra. He has also recorded with Hampton Hawes, Al Haig, Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and many others, including Red Rodney, who said this of Peter. "He's got that natural growl in his playing - yet he's soft and beautiful when he wants to be."

Veteran jazz trombone star, Jackie Free brings his Chicagoans back to The Arc, (St John's Arts Centre, St John's Walk, Market St. Old Harlow) on Thursday 30th May for a session of no-holds-barred-Dixieland Jazz. Tickets are a mere £10 on the door. The gig starts at 8pm. Further details - Tel: 01406 365731 - www.traditional-jazz.com

In a career which stretches back to the late '40s, Jack has played with many of his American musical heroes, including the sensational Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong. The Armstrong gig came about as a result of a call from the Marquis of Donegal, a besotted jazz fan, who used stage concerts at top London venues in the '50s. Young Jackie could not believe his luck, blowing alongside the great Satchmo.
Jackie became quite used to playing with celebrities at gigs arranged by Lord D, as Jackie called him. The Marquis arranged for the New Orleans clarinettist, George Lewis to play with Jackie. Other memorable occasions include sessions with, 'the Last of the Red Hot Mamas', Sophie Tucker and the legendary Judy Garland. At the height of the Trad boom in the '50s, Jack was blowing up a storm in the much respected Freddy Randall Jazz Band. He later joined the ensemble led by his old pal, clarinettist Dave Shepherd. During the 1980s Jack was a regular guest at the Square Jazz Club in Harlow, where he first played with ex Harlow drummer, John Petters' Dixielanders. Recordings with this line-up were made with former Tommy Dorsey and Bob Crosby trumpet star Yank Lawson. In 1989 he did a number of dates with the Legends of American Dixieland - Wild Bill Davison and Art Hodes, including a sell-out concert at the Playhouse, Harlow and the famous 100 Club in Oxford St. Jack was also pleased to be on a handful of dates with former Artie Shaw trumpeter, Billy Butterfield.
Thursday's gig spotlights top trumpeter, Pete Rudeforth, currently appearing with the Chris Barber Band, and one of the most talented jazz players in the UK. John Crocker, clarinet and tenor saxophone spent over 30 years in the renowned Chris Barber Jazz & Blues Band. A passionate and driving musician, John is the perfect foil for Jack's sliding trombone and Pete's soaring trumpet. The first class rhythm section features piano professor, Martin Litton and bassist Murray Salmon who, with drummin' man John Petters will form the driving dynamic support for this special concert. The Chicagoans' repertoire will echo the musical styles heard in the 'Windy City' when America's prohibition laws spawned illicit drinking clubs, owned by such gangsters as Al Capone. These 'Speakeasies' provided a musical base for many of Dixieland's first generation of players. Men like Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Eddie Condon and Jack Teagarden.

Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set the tempo, agree the intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. The show is available on line worldwide for 7 days via the BBC's 'Listen again' facility. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx

31st May - Marigolds 10th Birthday Party Bash

Marigolds Jazz Club celebrates its 10th Birthday and is holding a special 'party gig' featuring some of the local musicians who helped to start the Club including Debbie Blossom, Duncan Lane, Geoff Duckworth, Kate Thompson amongst others. The Jazz Club was started by Greg Racey and Bob French in 2003 featuring mainstream and modern jazz. They were ably supported by Vince Dunn, the then Cricket Club President who was also a jazz lover and Paul and Christine Baxter who joined the band at the end of the cricket season. The first nationally known musician to play at Marigolds was Don Rendell in 2005 who was introduced by Kate Thompson then a pupil of Dons. Since then the Club has presented many nationally and internationally famous jazz stars including John Altman, Alan Barnes, Clark Tracey, Peter King, Derek Nash, Alan Skidmore and many others. Top vocalists have also been featured and last year Elaine Delmar and James Torme, son of the legendary Mel both performed at the Club. The Club would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support of local star musicians including pianists Brian Dee and Ted Beament and drummer Martin Guy. All have been instrumental in attracting other first class musicians to the Club. Mid monthly gigs were started in 2005 featuring alternative types of music and Music at Marigolds came into being. In 2008 these gigs metamorphosed into Marigolds Blues Club featuring good quality blues music of all types.

7th June - The Spanish Harlow Orchestra http://www.spanishharlow.co.uk
Adam Amor tenor, soprano saxes, backing vocals, Pete Lemer piano, Steve Cook double bass, Laura Tarantini-Amor vocals, Will Street violin, Angus Moncrieff trumpet, David Ellingham Baritone and Alto saxophones and Andy Vellacott and Mike Cuthbert percussion.

The SHO is a very hugely talented 9-piece band bringing the sounds of salsa and Latin jazz led by composer and arranger, Adam Amor. Adam studied with Tito Puente, Luis Bauzo and Paquito D'Rivera. during his 5-year residency in New York. Since returning to the UK he has drawn on that experience to create what has become the SHO. Pete Lemer on piano is famous for touring with Ginger Baker in the Baker-Gurvitz Army and for being a core member of Barbara Thompson's Paraphanalia. Steve Cook on double bass has previously worked with Soft Machine, Paraphanalia and Mike Westbrook. Laura Tarantini-Amor born in New York of Puerto Rican decent provides the driving vocals combining Salsa and Soul for a truly sensational sound. Will Street on violin and Angus Moncrieff on trumpet have both studied jazz at Berklee College in the US. Both are bandleaders, composers and arrangers in their own rights. Will has appeared with Michael Brecker and Shirley Horn. David Ellingham on Baritone and Alto saxophones is the in-demand Cambridge-based sax player who puts the tone in baritone sax. Alternating between timbales and congas are two of the most sought after and versatile percussionists in the region, Andy Vellacott and Mike Cuthbert. Don't miss the chance to see such a talented group of musicians playing truly great Salsa.

14th June - Blues Abuse - http://www.bluesabuse.com/Blues_Abuse/Welcome.html Steve Morrison vocals and guitar, Alan Glen harmonica and Al Hughes drums.

Original 3 piece blues combo led by guitarist Steve Morrison and featuring virtuoso harmonica playing by Alan Glen (ex Yardbird) and the creative but always sensitive rhythms of Al Hughes on drums. Steve has developed a guitar technique that enables him to play lead, rhythm and bass at the same time (it has to be seen to be believed) creating driving rhythms complementing his slide-guitar.

28th June - Standard Miles - The Simon Spillett Quintet plays Miles Davies
http://www.simonspillett.com/ http://www.triorecords.co.uk/henry_lowther.html http://www.johncritchinson.com/ http://www.triorecords.co.uk/dave_green.html http://www.southendjazzco-op.co.uk/gpage17.html
Simon Spillett Sax, Henry Lowther Trumpet, John Critchinson Keyboards, Dave Green Bass, Trever Tomkins Drums

Standard Miles presents a British jazz supergroup revisiting the music played by the legendary Miles Davis. The loose, spontaneous and elastic treatments that Miles' quintet gave Broadway song material in the 1960's are the inspiration and provide the repertoire for a band full of well-known names. Led by Award winning Simon Spillett on saxaphone with Trumpeter Henry Lowther who is widely regarded as the best among British brass players, and pianist John Critchinson, bassist Dave Green and drummer Trevor Tomkins form the most democratic of rhythm sections. This promises to be an exceptional evening of great jazz.

12th July - Kent Duchaine http://www.kentduchaine.com

All the way from the US, Kent Duchaine vocals and guitar and Leadbessie the guitar (a beat up 1934 National Steel Guitar but don't say it to her face).
It has been said that since going solo in 1982 and hitting the roads, riding the rails, flying the skies and sailing the seas, Kent and Leadbessie have probably by now clocked up over two million miles together including over 71 overseas tours. Kent has a powerful playing technique that demands the audience's attention. With intricate finger picking and gracefully bottleneck glides he personifies what the blues is all about. Coupled in typical blues musician's style Kent tells stories of his youth, his adventures, his family and friends, the old and greats and much more. With an uplifting persona and crowd pleasing demeanor and, of course, his incredible musical proficiency, the man is known and loved the world over. He has listened to, hung out with, opened up for, traveled and played with most of the great Blues men and women his whole adult life. This is a bit of a departure for Marigolds but this is not a show to miss.

26th July - Bobby Wellins and the Brian Dee Trio http://bobbywellins.co.uk and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Dee

Robert Coull "Bobby" Wellins, born in Glasgow on 24 January 1936, is a Scottish tenor saxophonist best known for his collaboration with Stan Tracey on the seminal 1965 British jazz album Under Milk Wood. In a 1998 poll by Jazz UK magazine, readers chose this record as their all-time favourite British jazz album despite the thousands of records made in the intervening 33 years. Wellins studied alto saxophone and harmony with his father before moving to London in the mid-1950s. He was a member of Buddy Featherstonhaugh's quintet in the late 1950s, together with Kenny Wheeler and around that time also joined drummer Tony Crombie's Jazz Inc., where he first met up with pianist Tracey, and going on to join Tracey's quartet in the early 1960s a collaboration that lasts to this day. In the intervening time Bobby has had a varied career including periods of semi-retirement playing with many of the well-known performers on the British jazz scene. .
Brian Dee needs no introduction to Marigolds having backed a number of well-known front men and women over the years.

9th August - Rollo Markee and the Tailshakers www.myspace.com/rollomarkee

Fronted by the inimitable Rollo Markee on harmonica and vocals and with the stinging licks and west coast rhythms of Steve Fossey on blues guitar, the band play an authentic blend of Chicago blues and west coast swing... A red-hot band that's bound to get you moving and grooving! What could be more perfect for a Speakeasy Sunday? Rollo Started playing Blues at the age of seventeen having been inspired by his mentor Julius Junior. Twenty years on he has developed a rich, passionate and authentic blues voice. His valve amplified Harp playing is full of tone, style and energy. Working as a musician an actor and a dancer has made Rollo the consummate frontman, engaging with and enthusing audiences across Europe. The Tailshakers formed in 1998 with a vision to create a Blues band with an authentic 50's sound. They use vintage instruments, microphones and amplifiers to create a sound reminiscent of the Chess Recordings. Their dedication to blues and their attention to detail have produced a confident, stylish and highly entertaining act. The Tailshakers' show contains original material that takes in Chicago blues, boogaloo, Latin and swing, as well as some of the choicest blues players from the era.

30th August - The Don Wellar Quartet. Don Wellar on Tenor Sax, John Donaldson on Piano, Andrew Cleyndert on Bass, Dave Barry on Drums.

Don Weller began learning clarinet at the age of 14, and although classically educated he began playing in Dixieland bands around the Croydon area. He later switched to tenor saxophone and played in Kathy Stobart's rehearsal band. In the 1970s his jazz-rock group Major Surgery played only Weller's compositions. This was followed by a quartet with drummer Bryan Spring. At the same time he worked regularly with pianist Stan Tracey, and also with Harry Beckett and in a quintet with Art Themen. Renowned for his versatility, he has played with artists such as Alan Price, Tina May and Charlie Hearnshaw. He appears as lead sax (with Tower of Power backing him on horns)on the instrumental track "Nascimento" of Cat Stevens' 1978 LP Back To Earth.

In 1981 he stood in for Michael Brecker when the Gil Evans Orchestra played at the Bracknell Jazz Festival, before touring the UK and recording with trumpeter, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, added on to the Weller/Spring Quartet. He also played and recorded with Evans' British Orchestra in 1983. Also in the 1980s, together with his friend and fellow tenor sax Dick Morrissey, Weller was a regular member of Rocket 88, the boogie-woogie fun band set up by Ian "Stu" Stewart and Bob Hall, appearing on the band's only album. He has been involved with the films Absolute Beginners and Stormy Monday both as performer and composer. He won the 'Top Tenor' award in 1994, 1996 and 1998.[clarification needed] He formed a big band to perform his "Pennine Suite" at the 1996 Appleby Jazz Festival, and since then the band has regularly appeared at other jazz festivals. A recent project is his 'Electric Jazz Octet'.

History of Jazz in Essex - Do you have any Memories?

Essex on Tour is current undertaking research (led by Essex based musician Snowboy) into the History of Jazz in Essex- spanning back the last 70 years with the aim of creating an exhibition which will tour around the county and be hosted in the libraries. Project Manager Tony Morrison says “It’s an exciting project as we seek out and interview the musicians / promoters / venues that have played their part in the jazz scene across region over the last 60 years and though you wouldn’t necessary think it there have been some key people based in Essex that not only have been part of a local scene but also had an impact nationally”

The project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Essex County Council plus supported by National Jazz Archives (based in Loughton) and Essex Music Services and as well as the exhibition there will be performances by top jazz players at various events to help raise the profile of the exhibition featuring a launch at Chelmsford Library in September. So if anyone has an exciting story to tell or some information that may be of interest then they should contact project manager Tony on tony.m...@essex.gov.uk

"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days." "Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. In a career which stretches back to the late '40s, Jack has played with many of his American heroes, including Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong. The Armstrong gig came about from a call from the Marquis of Donegal, a besotted jazz fan, who staged concerts at top London venues in the '50s. The Marquis arranged for the New Orleans clarinettist, George Lewis to play with Jackie. Other memorable occasions include sessions with, 'the Last of the Red Hot Mamas', Sophie Tucker and Judy Garland. At the height of the Trad boom in the '50s, Jack was blowing up a storm in the Freddy Randall Jazz Band. He later joined the ensemble led by his old pal, clarinettist Dave Shepherd. During the 1980s Jack was a regular guest at the Square Jazz Club in Harlow, where he first played with ex Harlow drummer, John Petters' Dixielanders. In 1989 he did a number of dates with the Legends of American Dixieland - Wild Bill Davison and Art Hodes, including a sell-out concert at the Playhouse, Harlow and the famous 100 Club in Oxford St.
Thursday's gig spotlights top trumpeter, Pete Rudeforth, currently with the Chris Barber Band, and one of the most talented jazz players in the UK. John Crocker, clarinet and tenor saxophone spent over 30 years in the Chris Barber Jazz & Blues Band. The first class rhythm section features piano professor, Martin Litton and bassist Murray Salmon who, with drummin' man John Petters will form the driving dynamic support for this special concert.

However, the event is being held to help raise funds for Parkinsons UK and Lords Taverners so donations will of course be welcome.

However, if you want to know a little more about the band and what they get up to you can visit the Festival website on www.woodfordfestival.org.uk"ust in case! nice jam great atmosphere!

The Hertfordshire Music Service and North Herts Youth Jazz run the North Herts Youth Jazz Big Band

The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings, term time, at The North Herts Music School, Highbury House, Highbury Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 9RU 01462 434052. Rehearsals run from 1715 to 1845. Up to age 19 or older if in full time education. We would welcome interest from rhythm section, horn section players and singers. Musicians of grade 5 standard and upwards. Either acoustic or electric bass players. Please be prepared to read charts too! Improvisers will be especially welcome but guidance and instruction will be given to all who wish it. We would also like to encourage composers to come along and write for this group. This band will perform at least once in public each term to promote the playing of jazz amoung young people and perform a wide range of jazz repertoire, from Duke Ellington to Mark Lockheart. There is a termly fee for membership, though a remission of fees scheme is operated by the Hertfordshire Music Service, subject to terms and conditions.

And especially for those of you with children/grandchildren still in school, we would like to bring to your attention the excellent music services and facilities provided by Essex Music Services. They are part of Essex County Council and provide " Quality instrumental tuition and workshops to school and colleges in Essex, covering all major orchestral and band instruments and musical styles" " The opportunity for young people to perform in many youth orchestras and choirs " and " Concerts throughout the county where the groups showcase their talents."

One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country's leading jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition. He has recorded and toured with Radiohead and appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. He is also the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz. Tickets for Essex Music Services' Jazz concerts may be purchased by calling 01206 798788 for tickets or email beverley...@essex.gov.uk

Just a reminder - I am sure most of you already listen in, but if you weren't aware of it you really should be listening to jazz broadcaster of the year Paul Barnes's show The Late Paul Barnes. The show is broadcast each Saturday between 11pm and 1am on the following BBC stations: Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Cambridgeshire, Northampton and 3CR (Beds, Bucks, Herts). His website is www.themusichothouse.co.uk - here are a couple of extracts:

The Duncan Fraser Big Band present:

'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase, featurING some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. His music is

fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond." ORDER YOUR COPY NOW from www.esteemrecords.com

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!
