The Hot Orange Big Band are presenting a Mingus Tribute gig at the 606 Club 90 Lots Road, SW10 0QD on Sunday 22nd April. 12.30pm for a two-set performance beginning at 1.30pm and concluding around 4pm
It'll soon be Sunday 22nd April, the exact 90th Anniversary of the birth of the highly influential American double bassist and jazz composer Charles Mingus. And on that very day Hot Orange will be presenting a special 90th Anniversary Mingus Tribute at the 606 Club in Chelsea (starting at 1.30pm). As many of you know, Dave Hammer's pianist father Bob (many of whose arrangements we feature) worked closely with Mingus in New York in the early 1960s, and actually did the instrumental arrangements on some of the legendary Mingus albums produced in that period.
We were keeping our fingers crossed that Bob (now in his 80s but still composing, arranging, and performing in the Seattle area) would be fit enough to join us for that special celebration. Regrettably, he has not yet fully recovered from a neck operation, but we have the next best thing. He has been busy composing a brand new five movement suite and on the day before our gig, the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra will be performing the world premiere in Seattle in his presence. We are delighted to announce that we too will be performing it at our 606 gig, a unique Trans-Atlantic premiere! All this, plus many classic Mingus tunes ("Moanin", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", and "Better Get Hit In Your Soul" to name but a few) in the authentic arrangements by Bob Hammer. What better way to celebrate the anniversary of one of the revolutionaries of Jazz history!
We are sure that many of you will wish to join us on this historic occasion so you are recommended to make your table reservation at the legendary 606 Club as soon as possible. You can do this by calling 020-7352 5953, or else book on-line at http://www.606club.co.uk
Doors open from 12.30pm for a two-set performance beginning at 1.30pm and concluding around 4pm. There is a music cover charge of £8. Please note that alcoholic beverages are only available to patrons ordering meals; the 606 Club offers a very reasonably priced menu. If you don't wish to eat, soft drinks and hot beverages are also available. Moreover, if you haven't yet sampled the ambience of the 606 Club you are in for a treat; the irrepressible Jamie Cullum calls it "London's Best Music Venue!"
The 606 Club is located at 90 Lots Road, SW10 0QD, just by the big power station alongside Chelsea Harbour. London Overground's Imperial Wharf Station is close by (trains from Clapham Junction, West Brompton, Shepherds Bush, Willesden Junction etc.) as is local bus route C3. Just a short walk away are buses 11, 22, and 328 (Kings Road) plus 19, 49, 170, 319, and 345 (north end of Battersea Bridge). Fulham Broadway Tube station is approx 15 minutes walk. On Sundays there is free parking in Lots Road and surrounding streets.

The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

Both her parents were singers and, following their divorce when Liane was six, she stayed with her mother and sister at her grand-parents' house, where she was lovingly encouraged to carry on making as much of a racket as possible. Liane has worked with many artists ranging from Sir Paul McCartney and Gerry Rafferty to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. She has also performed as the lead vocalist and Wurlitzer keyboardist for the drum and bass band London Elektricity. She is a regular performer at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and the 606 Club in London, and has made several albums. In 2005 she won two awards in the BBC Jazz Awards: Best Vocalist and Best of Jazz. In 2006 she won the Marston Pedigree Jazz Award for best vocalist. On 13 May 2008, Andy Burnham MP, then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, presented her with the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Musician of the Year Award. We are so privileged to have Liane at the Smack. Come early to get your seat.

29th. Fargo. Fargo began in early 2007 when vocalist/guitarist Ian Slater and bassist Dave Bronze decided it was time to act on a long discussed idea to put together a band with a difference. The brief was simple; it had to be rootsy, it had to be musically interesting, but most of all - it had to be fun! A mutual interest in Western Swing seemed to point the way. The natural choice of co-vocalist was Heather Simmons, whose early 20th century jazz influences were a perfect complement to the mix. After a period of time compiling and rehearsing songs, drummer Andy Peek was invited along and immediately accepted an invitation to join. After a long search violinist Mike Piggott and multi-instrumentalist Martin Wheatley were added to the line-up. In December 2007 the band performed it's first gig in a small Essex pub before a few dozen people to a rapturous response. The Fargo story had just begun................

The Maritime Room at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend have annouced their new programme for their monthly club "The Jazz Mix" which runs on the last Thursday of each month hosting quality acts from the musical genres of jazz, funk, soul and blues. Promoter Mick Crook says "having previously been involved in running a successful friendly local club for 5 seasons my aim is to replicate that with "The Jazz Mix" and put on a varied monthly programme that he hopes everyone will be appreciative of. Doors open 8pm, music 8.30-11pm. Generally admission £10, students £5 with valid photo card
April 26th - there is a slight change to the programme - we welcome back local born saxophonist Gary Plumley with a top quality jazz quartet.
Gary Plumley is one of the most emotionally powerful tenor saxophonists around. His broad, soulful sound is always in demand in the pop, rock and soul world, he is internationally known through his work with Terry Callier, Snowboy and the Latin Section, George Michael, Swing Out Sister and the Stereophonics, in addition to being a very popular solo artist in his own right.
From the outset Gary started playing guitar aged 13. At 15 he was playing at the Kings Head, Rochford with The Jazz Group. The saxophone players in the band inspired him to take up the saxophone at aged 16. He was self-taught at first, he gained a lot of valuable experience playing over at the Zero 6 in Southend, which held a musicians' workshop rehearsing and playing with local bands. At 22 he played his first pro gig with The Rocky Horror Show touring England, Ireland and Germany. More work with local bands followed. After answering an advert in Melody Maker he joined the Royal Caribbean Cruise Liner for a six-month cruise round the islands, gaining much needed experience. He also worked in Denmark with a pop band but soon realised that as a self-taught musician, he had a few gaps in my knowledge of music. He applied to, and was accepted at, the Guildhall School of Music at 28 years old. After that he moved to London, started with Sax Appeal and met most of the musicians he still works with today.Gary will be joined on the stage by the electifying Pete Adams on keyboards (if you came to see Nelson Rangell back in October I think you'll know what I mean!); young talented bassist Sandy Suchodolski and much travelled Nic France on drums.
Doors open 8pm, music from 8.30pm to 11pm. Admission £10, students £5 with valid photo card
May 31st - sadly vocalist Tommy Blaize has had to cancel the gig due to commitments with the Strictly Come Dancing band they are about to embark on a debut UK tour …I'm really hoping to be able to re-schedule the gig for next season….so watch this space! We have a short summer recess but we'll be back with a new season of The Jazz Mix starting on Thursday 30th August…put it in your diary now!

27th April - The Clive Fenner Quartet. Clive Fenner drums, Martin Hathaway alto sax/ flute, Robin Aspland piano, Geoff Gascoyne bass.
There is far too little space here to even start to list the bands playing CV and what follows is heavily abridged www.jazzsummerschool.com/tutors/clivefenner.htm
Clive plays swinging and exciting jazz incorporating numerous influences from his varied musical experiences. As resident drummer and organiser at The Eastside Jazz Club E11 for more than 10 years he has supported many of the country's top jazz musicians far too numerous to mention here. He started playing in blues, pop and jazz-rock bands but always had a love of jazz since he first heard " Straight No Chaser" in his early teens. He studied and became good friends with top American drummer Clifford Jarvis ( Freddie Hubbard, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders) and Britains premier drum teacher Bob Armstrong.
As well as performing Clive also teaches and is the founder and Director of "Jazzsummerschool" offering jazz courses in France and Cuban music in Havana Cuba.
www.martin-hathaway.com/About_Martin.html
Born in Chelmsford, Martin Hathaway has established a reputation as one of Britain's leading jazz performers and educators, working in many different ensembles covering a wide range of genres. He is probably best known for his long association (since 1988) with the legendary British jazz pianist and composer Michael Garrick, playing saxophones, clarinet and flute in many of his projects, including his Big Band and the 'New Quartet' but his many and varied accomplishments are numerous. It has been said that Robin Aspland's sensitive and intuitive playing, his complete command of the piano and swinging style makes him arguably one of the best jazz pianists the UK has ever produced. Again Robin has played and recorded with far too many top musicians to mention here and has also taught on Michael Garrick's Jazz Academy Summer Schools and Piano People Course
www.geoffgascoyne.com
Geoff Gascoyne, married to jazz vocalist Trudy Kerr, has been described as a star bass player but is also a renowned composer and arranger. Again Geoff's career is too varied to do justice here other than to say that he has played and recorded with many famous and respected musicians not only freelance or in a band but also in his own combo taking him around the world. When in the country Geoff has tutored at the Royal Academy of Music in London.13th May - The Eric Ranzoni Trio: www.myspace.com/ericranzoni -- www.ericranzoni.co.uk
From North London the acclaimed Eric Ranzoni brings his Trio to Marigolds after last year's knockout gig. Renowned on the London Blues scene, including a residency at Boisdales in Belgravia, for his tremendous piano playing Eric's musical talents are second to none. Since coming back to London in 2003, he's gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile pianist, "equipped" with a warm singing voice. Solo or accompanied by excellent musicians, he's played the Blues (and Roots music in general) in many top venues in London and about, with frequent stints abroad. In great demand as Blues pianist with several London-based bands, a recent highlight was playing the piano in the UK tour of Mud Morganfield, the eldest son of Muddy Waters, along with Big Joe Louis and West Weston.25th May - Heads South: www.headssouth.com with John Harriman piano & keyboards, Steve Waterman trumpet, Buster Birch drums, Chino Martell Morgan percussion, and Tim Robertson/Andres Lafone bass.
John Harriman has had a rich and varied career playing piano including living in the USA and playing in a variety of colourful California nightclubs for many years. John's music reflects his diverse background, with Irish, French & English grandparents, he and nowadays often decamps to his Spanish wife's Castilian homeland. John has played with a range of leading artists including Mark Lockheart, Steve Waterman, Nick Smart, Jo Fooks and Mike Hext and in the USA with one of the leading California big bands with guest artists such as Phil Woods and Woody Shaw.
Steve Waterman is renowned as one of the top British jazz trumpet players both at home and on the international scene. Steve has had a remarkable recording career spanning 20 years and has worked with a great variety of jazz and cabaret artists worldwide. He is professor of Jazz Trumpet at The Royal Academy Of Music and Trinity College of Music in London and has held master classes and workshops throughout the UK and also in Cuba, Spain and elsewhere. www.stevewaterman.co.uk
A musician of great versatility, Buster Birch has gigged with many of the UK's finest jazz musicians. Buster has studied music extensively including a spell at the Drummers Collective in Manhattan. As well as Jazz, Buster is highly experienced in many fields of music including playing in two successful world music groups. Equally extensive is Buster's experience in music education and his work as a tutor is far to varied to detail here. www.busterbirch.com
Chino Martell Morgan, originally from Cuba, which is his principle influence, is a highly respected musician and is highly in demand in salsa and latin jazz and has played at many leading venues including Ronnie Scotts and the Jazz Café.
Originally from Uruguay, Andres has been at the forefront of the UK Latin scene since the late eighties and has toured or recorded with numerous Latin musicians and has played at major European Jazz festivals and has performed throughout the world, including China, Japan, South Africa and USA.
Tim is one of New Zealand's leading bassists and has performed with a variety of world class musicians and forged a diverse career in music. After exploring the clarinet and saxophone Tim eventually, at the age of 15, discovered the bass guitar. Tim studied music at the Wellington Conservatory of Music where he subsequently taught while performing with many NZ and international artists including US jazz trombonist John Fedchock and Indian violin virtuoso Subramanium. He located to the UK after studying under a scholarship at the Royal Conservatorium in Den Haag in the Netherlands. Tim is an in demand player on both electric and acoustic basses, having performed internationally at arts festivals, musical theatre tours and on high profile recordings www.tim-and-kate.com

We have been asked to mention a venue in Tunbridge Wells, Kent called Trinity Theatre (www.trinitytheatre.net) which hosts music, dance, theatre, comedy and film events. It is almost entirely run by volunteers and has been going for over 25 years:
A little further afield there is jazz every Sunday afternoon at the Railway Hotel in Southend from 5pm to 7pm. 32 Clifftown Road, Town Centre, Southend-On-Sea SS1 1AJ. A day on the seafront getting tanned and/or rusty, a drink and a couple of hours of jazz once the sun (yeah, right …) starts to go down, then just enough time to get back to Buckhurst Hill for your favourite jam – what better way could there be to spend a Sunday?

JULIAN SIEGEL tenor sax, ANDREA Di BIASE bass & JAMES MADDREN drums + support from TORI HANDSLEY TRIO -"This is a striking debut that marks out Heinen's ensemble to be far more than just another piano trio." Tom Grey - London Jazz. The raw material for the debut of the young London-based pianist-composer Bruno Heinen's Dialogues Trio comes from a tune that has been playing in most of our heads since childhood. 'Twinkle Twinkle' has ten variations on the titular nursery rhyme in various wittily disguised forms that appear as small motifs and musical fragments played by each of the members of his piano trio. But the Twinkle melody is merely the trio's point of departure. Heinen is contemporary in every sense of the word and mines the depth of his diverse influences throughout the recording. PLUS...
Contemporary original harp led trio which draws upon jazz, rock, latin and classical influences, creating a tapestry of beats and strings. Resounding riffs, driven by heavy grooves, layered with haunting free flowing melodic passages. Particular influences include: EST, Neil Cowley Trio, Bad Plus, McCoy Tyner, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Nigel Kennedy, Keith Jarrett, Debussy. Tori is a contemporary harpist who focuses on composing and arranging music for the harp, influenced by a wide range of styles and instruments, hoping to demonstrate the versatility of the harp. She has been fortunate to perform with artists including with Nigel Kennedy for his Duke Ellington tour, and is honoured to be joined here by two fantastic musicians on the jazz circuit, for the debut of her new trio: TORI HANDSLEY electric harp, CHRIS NICKOLLS drums, RICHARD SADLER bass - 7.30-11pm -10/£8 http://www.wegottickets.com/event/163164Sun 29 April - LONDON CITY BIG BAND 'classic big band, Basie to Sinatra & Ella'- 1-4pm -10/£8 http://www.wegottickets.com/event/163165

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.
On Saturday May 31st, 7.30 pm, Interplay jazz quintet and folk musician Toby Shaer are playing a concert at St James The Less, Hadleigh. £9 including refreshments. Contact: 01268 757370.
If you're in Dublin .... New Orleans is where jazz was born, but New York is where it spoke it's first words. The very first jazz record was recoded 95 years ago this year, on February 26, 1917 on the Victor record label. The band were a quintet called The Original Dixieland Jass Band and the two tracks recorded that day were ' Dixie Jass Band One-Step ' and ' Livery Stable Blues '. You can find both songs on YouTube. The earliest Irish jazz recording i have in my record collection is 'That Patterson Girl EP' from Northern Ireland based jazz and blues singer Anna Ottilie Patterson (1932-2011) which was recorded on the Jazz Today label back in 1955. Married to the Big Band giant that was Chris Barber in 1959 and divorced in 1983. I actually found and purchased this in the Oxfam branch on Parliament street along with some original Blue Note records from the early 60's for the princely sum of 2 Euros each, Bargain ! (Always good to keep your eye on thrift and charity shops.) Seeing that our State broadcaster RTE banned the playing of jazz music on the airwaves until 1947, probably there wasn't much of a market for jazz in Ireland in the early 2Oth Century, but if any reader can inform me differently of early Irish jazz releases, you can get in touch at jazzin...@gmail.com.
Friday evening jazz sessions from 6.30pm at the Radisson Hotel, Golden Lane have appearances from top local crooners Kevin Morrow (April 13) and Cary Posavitz (April 27) amongst others.
Another venue that's just opened it's door to jazz is the La Caverna restaurant on Fownes street, Temple Bar. Situated in their 300 year old red brick basement, it happens every Friday and Saturday from 10.30pm, this is now "officially" Dublin's only late night jazz club, so get on down there.
Guitarist Mike Nielsen and friends do a weekly Saturday session at KC Peaches, Nassau Street from 8pm. Admission Free but a donation into a hat at the end of the evening is appreciated, as this pays for the band.
Ace jazz drummer Kevin Brady and his Organics collective have 3 gigs at JJ's this month with the main event being the Dave Redmond Quartet featuring Jason Rigby (US) on sax, and Bill Carrothers (US) piano on Saturday April 28th with doors 9pm and admission 12 Euros, expect a blistering set. www.organicsmusic.com.
Cormac O' Brien continues his residency upstairs at the Central hotel, Exchequer Street with his Trio+1 every Sunday from 5pm and other gigs there can be be found at www.facebook.com/jazzcentral
Veteran crooner Kevin Morrow keeps packing them into the Burlington on Saturdays from 7.30pm and his Sunday gig at the Hampton hotel, Donnybrook moves to a new start time of 6pm, and a and they do a great steak there too !
The delectable Stella Bass with her Trio continue their long running Sunday residency at Cafe en Seine from 2pm, while a new jazz brunch has started at Brasserie Sixty 6, South Great Georges street from 12 Midday, worth checking out if you are up that early.
The outstanding Emilie Conway is on a roll since releasing her debut Cd last month with a mini tour around the country www.emilieconway.ie.
With all this live jazz going on, there is now no excuse for not getting out and supporting it especially with the majority of these gigs having no cover charge at the door...
This could be interesting, Anthony Downes is a professional camera man about town with full HD equipment for any band looking to record their live gigs (including live feed) for YouTube and band websites, the cost is from 50 Euros upwards, and he can be contacted at 086 1797058.
Finally, Blue Note recording artist Robert Glasper who recently sold out his Dublin show, has a cutting edge Cd release called ' Black Radio' out now which features collaborations with artists such as Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Bilal to name some. Fast becoming the Duke Ellington of Jazz Electronica, pianist Glasper mixes acoustic improvisation with Hip Hop, and turntable sampling to full effect. I have 4 copies of the Cd to give away, and all you need to do to enter the competition, is to text your full name to 087 2878755 before April 30th and good luck.

For those jazz musicians out there looking to hone their skills there are Thursday night workshops run by John Seeley in Leigh-on-Sea. www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk/Jazz-Workshop.html. All levels welcome, all instruments. At St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF
The aim of the Thursday Night Jazz Workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing. The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level. The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
3. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
Many thanks!
