Miles Davis tribute band Milestones will be playing at Annie's Jazz at the Smack Inn, Leigh on Sea this coming Tuesday evening (January 4th). Milestones will be playing tunes from the Miles Davis repertoire, including pieces from Kind of Blues, Milestones, Round About Midnight, Miles Smiles and more. The band consist of Ross Lawson on tenor, Chris Storey on trumpet, Chris Neill on piano, Steve Shone on bass and Mike Cuthbert on drums.

There is a charity function on Saturday, 15th January at Cupids Country Club, Cupids Chase, Great Wakering, Southend-on-Sea SS3 0AX in aid of Headstart4babies (www.headstart4babies.co.uk) which is a charity for babies suffering from plageiocephaly, which is when the skull grows slightly deformed. These children require special helmets that cost £2000 each so we are really hoping to raise as much money as possible! The evening features a buffet and disco, auction and raffle with fantastic prizes, and live music from Rat Pack singer Mike Sullivan, young singing sensation Nicola Lambrianos and Infusion (www.infusionband.co.uk). There is a great long-established jazz course which runs in Hutton near Brentwood on Thursday evenings, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The next course starts on 13th January and there are still a couple of places available! So if you have always fancied learning to play jazz why not make this one of your New Year resolutions? Or it would make a great Christmas pressie for musical family or friends! It is aimed at beginners to intermediate players who would like to improve their playing and understanding of jazz. The course covers modal and chordal playing, and advice on producing effective solos. Readers and non readers welcome. The Ipswich Jazz Collective meet once a month on a Friday to hold a jam session at the Golden Hind Pub on Nacton Road in Ipswich. They start at 7:30 with bass, drums, keyboard gear and a PA set up. Guitarists will need to bring their own amps. There's no entrance fee and all levels of player are catered for. Local bands also have the chance to do a set on their own. A new night at The Maritime Room at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend in the shape of a new monthly club called "The Jazz Mix". The club will run on the last Thursday of each month and will host quality acts from the musical genres of jazz, funk, soul and blues. A great regular jazz night in Harlow on the last Friday of every month – Music at Marigolds, Harlow Cricket Club. More at: www.musicatmarigolds.co.uk. For those of you who live locally you can, if you wish, visit the Clubhouse when it is open and have a drink in one of the most peaceful and picturesque parts of Old Harlow. Currently the Clubhouse is usually open on Saturdays and Sundays from about 12 to about 5 or 6pm depending on demand. The Clubhouse is also available for hire at very competitive rates. A day on the seafront getting tanned and/or rusty, a drink and a couple of hours of jazz once the sun (yeah, right …) starts to go down, then just enough time to get back to Buckhurst Hill for your favourite jam – what better way could there be to spend a Sunday?

Another Norfolk gig has just come to our attention. The Eddie Seales Big Band perform on the 1st Tuesday of the month (except Jan.) is at The William Burt Centre, West Winch (near Kings Lynn).

And especially for those of you with children/grandchildren still in school, or those with an interest in promoting music amongst our youth, we would like to bring to your attention the excellent music services and facilities provided by Essex Music Services. They are part of Essex County Council and provide:

One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) which is for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country's leading jazz musicians. Martin is a member of numerous orchestra and quintets and was one of the leading lights in establishing the Heathcote Arms as a prime venue for jazz in London, attracting the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Don Weller and other renowned jazz musicians. Martin regularly transcribes and arranges music for the EYJO, including 'Millennium' which was written for their performance at the Millennium Dome. He has won awards for both performance and composition including the MCPS Best Original Composition Award in the BBC Big Band Contest. Martin has recorded and toured with Radiohead and he appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. Martin Hathaway also is the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz.

Guitarist Martin Shepherd, a recent regular at the Buckhurst Hill jam, has just launched Jazz Zone, a CD of self-penned tunes covering bebop and Latin styles plus an altered blues. The obvious tonal reference points are George Benson and Wes Montgomery. The improvisations are of a high standard - Martin has a light touch and plays through the changes well. Drums and percussion are programmed but sound convincing. One for the car? Short Courses - A range of short courses are currently available. There is a jazz course running in Hutton near Brentwood on Thursday evenings, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
