25th October - Nigel Price Trio http://www.nigelprice.biz/index.html
Nigel Price Guitar, Pete Whittaker Organ and Matt Holmes Drums. Nigel is one of the top UK jazz guitar players. He's a regular performer at Ronnie Scott's where he has racked up over 150 performances, spent three years with the James Taylor Quartet, has performed with the BBC big band, the legendary David Axelrod and led his organ trio to first place in the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) awards for "best jazz ensemble" in 2010. He is a 'complete' guitarist who has good taste and a great sound coupled to a dazzlingly fleet-fingered technique as well as being an interesting composer. Drummer Matt Home is crisp, driving and thoroughly accomplished. Pete Whittaker demonstrated the Hammond organ's ability to simulate a 'little big band' while taking care of the bass duties. These guys have been together for eight years, touring the UK and have developed a musical empathy that is wonderful to hear. Do come and see them!
8th November - The Untouchables: www.theuntouchablesblues.com/
Keith Parker harp and vocals, Peter Ellison guitar and vocals, Paul 'Chuck' Green doghouse bass and Malcolm 'Eddie the Legend' Buckland drums. The Untouchables are champions of raw blues, basing their sound on the swinging soul of the great artists who recorded for Chess Records in the 50s. With a string bass, a stripped down drum kit, a cranked guitar through a hot valve amp and a wailing harp, this band turns any venue into a rocking juke joint. It has been said that, "The Untouchables play sparse, tasteful Chicago blues. Not blues rock but tight, swinging, focussed, authentic sounding urban blues, with every element honed to its bare essentials in an unostentatious display of taste and restraint' and 'The band have lived and breathed the style until it's so much a part of them that it oozes out of their pores. If you like Little Walter, Bo Diddley or Willie Dixon, then this is as close as you'll get to seeing them live. Utterly superb."
29th November - The Marigolds All Stars with Helen Keating
Helen Keating vocals, Jimmy Hastings saxophone, Tim Huskinson keyboards, Murray Salmon bass and Martin Guy drums.
13th December - Spikedrivers: www.spikedrivers.co.uk
Ben Tyzack: guitar, vocals & harmonica, Constance Redgrave: bass guitar, vocals & percussion, Maurice Mcelroy: drums, vocals & percussion. To quote Blues in Britain Spikedrivers are, 'One of the most original, innovative and exciting bands around, their combination of gutsy slide guitar, rock-solid bass, infectious grooves and highly distinctive vocals, creates a sound that is uniquely their own. They take you on a journey, from southern juke-joints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance.....' With an intoxicating blend of sounds, from the raw delta blues of Robert Johnson to the powerful soundscapes of Jimmy Page Spikedivers are unique and are a band not to be missed.

Wednesday 6th Nov- The Michael Weizman Project. Price: £8 Members, £9 Guests
Hailing from Israel, the Michael Weizman Project is now one of London's most exciting and talented bands whose sound is fresh and new whilst staying accessible to the public at large. Their music can be described as melodic contemporary jazz combined with world music, funk and pop, influenced by Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau, The Yellow Jackets, Dhafer Youssef, and Candy Dulfer. MW Project's repertoire is based on their own original compositions, combined with those of others, always arranged with an interesting approach to best take advantage of the unique sounds and talents of the group members. Whether atmospheric or groove oriented, the music is always exciting, relevant and contemporary. While a soloing aspect is central to the groups approach, melody and interaction is what it's all about.Wednesday 13th Nov - Kate Daniels Quartet. Price: £8 Members, £9 Guests
"Kate's vocals are poised, engaging and elegant. She sings like she is telling you a secret". So says John Etheridge, and so does everyone who's had the amazing experience of hearing Kate sing. One of the most emotional and involved vocalists on the Jazz scene today we are lucky to book her at MHJC. As if that wasn't enough she is supported tonight by some of the best accompanists in the UK today - Alec Dankworth (John & Cleo's little boy) on bass, David Newton keyboards, Graham Pike on trumpet and Winston Clifford drumming. Music, words and talent of the highest order tonight.

Charlie Wood (vocals & organ) Dave O'Higgins (tenor sax) Chris Allard (guitar) Clive Fenner (drums)Charlie Wood is a singer and keyboardist who covers all musical styles. As a Memphis native, he grew up immersed in jazz, blues and old-school R&B soul. With a quick ear for melody as a child, his dad's eclectic record collection soon became his favorite playground; later it would be his classroom - with faculty including Professors Mose Allison, Ray Charles, and Percy Mayfield. Time spent studying English Lit at Tulane allowed Charlie to soak up all the Crescent City's culture and music - especially the rich piano styles. Upon his return to Memphis, he was soon touring Europe and the US with blues legend Albert King, an experience that offered some valuable lessons on survival in the sometimes all-too-tough music business. Now living in the UK with wife Jacqui Dankworth, Charlie continues writing, touring and recording constantly. 'Lush Life' (Archer, 2012) is Charlie Wood's first effort at documenting his long experience performing the Great American Songbook. Strayhorn's classic title track is one of the finest examples of the often overlooked craft of songwriting in jazz. This album celebrates many of the great tunesmiths of jazz and 20th century popular music.

Graeme Hewitt Writes from Theale Jazz Club, nr Reading.
Holidays are bringing in to the band some guests, Phil Brown is joining us on the 8th again on trombone, Clive at the last minute is up in London. Steve Watling is over in Sharm and misses three weeks so John Nuttall is taking over the drum slot but then Steve is to undergo a hip replacement and will be missing for all of November and probably some of December. Baby Jools is with us on October 29th.
November 5th - 'firework night' - well, it will be for our club as Pete Allen is joining us again. Pete is always a 'tour de force' bringing his brand of exciting playing - and incidentally - calling in on us on his way back from Hull.
I'll be at the Lansdown Club, Luton with Dave Rance and Richard Leach on Monday 11th November and the Horns again on 17th.
Our full band will be at the 1066 Club Hastings on November 29th, and December 15th at the Concorde Club.
Tickets for our 40th Birthday Party on December 17th are close to being a sell-out not surprising as our guest is the great 'Chris Barber.'

*** MUSIC COURSES ***
New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy - The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all 'tools of the trade'.
Where: Ealing W5, West London
When: Course A - Fortnightly on Sundays plus performance dates and masterclasses
Course B - Fortnightly on Saturdays and as above
Course C - Monday evenings
Who for: Individuals who are serious about developing their knowledge and skills with a view to creating successful jazz performance - all styles, all ages, singers and instrumentalists.
Why: BIVJA is keen to encourage mature students as well as young people at the start of their careers.

Is it for me? Call for an informal chat on 020 8992 1571 (leave message and we'll call you back).
UNIQUE - BIVJA promotes a warm but challenging environment and it's different because of its very 'hands on' approach. Sessions will be followed by a de-brief, student feedback, career support and Q+A - again a unique opportunity
Specialist workshops - Participants will have access to workshops on specific skills such as recording, PA set up and mixing and workshops with visiting professional singers, instrumentalists and mentors. Tutors will vary including Gareth Williams - piano; Peter Ind - bass; Les Cirkel - drums. The support group created by this enterprise will assist students in self-promotion and performance opportunities.BIVJA Director - Verona Chard - 020 8992 1571 - leave message, and contact details. 07985 440902 www.veronachard.com/bivja v...@veronachard.com
Thursday Night Saxophone Workshop www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk
The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.
Saxophone Workshop Details -
Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm - 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels Welcome at St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF
Thursday Night Jazz Workshop www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk
The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.
3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
Many thanks!
Hi everyone
*** IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE *** Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk please, in a format which we can copy and paste. Many thanks.
The usual request to please spread the word!! Please forward this email to anyone who you think might be interested. If they send an email to ke...@jazzupdate.co.uk I will be happy to add them to the mailing list; alternatively they can sign themselves up by going to www.jazzupdate.co.uk.
And of course ... if you have a gig or anything jazz-related that you think the world would benefit from knowing about please pass me on the details and I will be more than happy to add it to the newsletter (in text format which I can copy and paste please, NOT jpgs or similar of flyers). Feel free to to come along and leave flyers etc. on the tables at the Buckhurst Hill jam too.

29th November - The Marigolds All Stars with Helen Keating www.timhuskisson.com www.martinguy.co.uk
Helen Keating vocals, Jimmy Hastings saxophone, Tim Huskinson keyboards, Murray Salmon bass and Martin Guy drums. There is not enough space in these notes to do full justice to tonight's line up of talented stars some of whom are returning to Marigolds by popular request. All have had long, varied and successful careers on the jazz scene and we apologise for being so brief other than to say that they have all played with numerous other well-known and respected musicians.
As an interesting aside, and for no other reason, we have included an amusing anecdote about Jimmy Hastings. Jimmy auditioned for the Humphrey Littleton band in the early sixties but did not cut the mustard possibly because he was auditioning as an alto sax player but was then playing tenor. Since then he became one of the most respected musicians on the British scene, in demand for session work and jazz assignments in numerous top bands. However, about thirty years after his ill-fated audition with Humphrey Lyttelton, Hump telephoned to offer him a job which Jimmy accepted and subsequently stayed with the band to this day. Humph said, "Thirty-odd years may seem like a long time to mull over an audition, but one doesn't rush into these things!"Apologies to the other musicians performing tonight for not including similar anecdotes about them all.

Tuesday 12th November. The Georgia Mancio Quartet. Award-winning jazz vocalist and lyricist, Georgia Mancio, is one of the UK's most important and original new artists. A performer of pure class and integrity, Georgia has proved herself a true improviser with an unfailing flow, innate musicality and a boundless and bold imagination. Her music embraces her Anglo/Italian/Uruguayan background: seamlessly performing in five languages and interpreting Fats Waller, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Tom Waits, David Bowie, Kenny Wheeler, The Beatles, Brazilian samba, Chilean folk and Italian pop often with her own beautifully crafted lyrics. One of the finest exponents of jazz in the UK today.
Tuesday 19th November. The Nicolas Meier Trio. In just a few short years UK-based Swiss guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the UK's most original guitarists. Drawing on a love of Turkish, Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango all mix with jazz, Meier has developed his own unique sound with his regular group (latest release was his eight album with his full band). We have seen Nicolas with Gabrielle Ducomble and now with his own trio we hear some of his own compositions. A wonderful guitarist and a lovely person. Can't wait!
While a soloing aspect is central to the groups approach, melody and interaction is what it's all about.
Wednesday 13th Nov - Kate Daniels Quartet.
