Dear friends, dear acquaintances, dear people randomly selected from collective emails. This Sunday, 21st April, you will have the highly acclaimed opportunity to see the highly acclaimed Aldevis Tibaldi London Sextet, in their next concert of their highly acclaimed international tour. This concert will be at The White Hart, in Whitechapel, East London, a highly acclaimed melting pot of cultures and artistic tendencies. East London is a lovely area and the venue is about to be upgraded to the level of "gastropub". At the moment they serve some highly acclaimed pizza. Last year East London hosted the Olympics. As a tribute to this event, many musicians nowadays only perform every four years. The Sextet offers a highly acclaimed selection of original composition and some tribute to other composers, like Mingus, Ellington and Ilario Persichetti. Some musically talented friends might be invited to join the band. The sextet is a melting pot of highly acclaimed international talents, like: John Eacott on trumpet and flugelhorn (UK) Aldevis Tibaldi on saxophones (Somewhere) Mattias Eskillsson on trombone and misspelled surname (Sweden), Paolo Losi on piano (Italy), Erik Garlic Rupert on (hopefully) double bass (USA), Chris Gale on drums (some british protectorate, like Kent). I will contact Dave Holland via facebook asking for his friendship and then offering him the gig. If he accepts, Erik is out (don't tell him).

Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. Matt Furness on drums drives the whole group - a veteran ... but still only 14! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail.
The Cottage is CAMRA's award winning city pub and offers good food plus a range of real ales, Belgian beers, single malts or soft drinks, teas and coffees www.thecottagenorwich.co.uk
All players get a chance to show their skills; fair competence is the minimum requirement but the essentials are commitment, improvising skills and a passion for swinging jazz! Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set the tempo, agree the intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. The show is available on line worldwide for 7 days via the BBC's 'Listen again' facility. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx

Their shows are always a clever mix of carefully chosen American Songbook standards blended with some creative West Coast cool, sparkling rhythms and jazzy lounge music plus interesting new jazz improvisations to some iconic contemporary pop classics, all in the space of two relentlessly entertaining sets.

More recently still, he has worked with Lollo in Italy with Lollo and numerous Italian players including Jacopo Martini and Attilio Troiano (Winner of 2010 Italian Jazz Newcomer award). The influences of Artie Shaw and Stephane Grappelli can be heard in Andy's playing - their unparalleled sense of swing, technical excellence and stylish ,arrangements are second to none. Andy has sought to combine these with the soulful guitar sounds of Peter Green and BB King in playing many UK Festivals. Nils Solberg performs on intimately acoustic or amplified guitar, either solo or in larger combinations, playing Latin, traditional, mainstream and gypsy jazz to big band swing. As part of Kingston University's Improvisation and Digital Arts Festival http://www.idaf.co.uk on Friday 19th April, at 1pm John Butcher presents a Lunchtime Concert at Coombehurst Studio, Kingston University, Kingston Hill, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 7LB
Renowned experimental saxophonist John Butcher presents Improvisations for acoustic and amplified saxophones.
"In Butcher's hands the saxophone's existence as a column of air, as a vibrating reed, as a system of keys and pads, becomes central, suggesting the saxophone as mechanism and intermediary, a kind of delicate and complex scientific instrument of measurement whether meant for the laboratory or, more likely, the voyage. In his practice there is clearly also a concern with place. The individual take is privileged, but the notion of a changing space seems paramount too.
I do not know who was first to comment on the extent to which Butcher's acoustic preoccupations produce results that seem electronic, or whether it preceded his interest in electronic feedback and amplified saxophone. It's a resemblance that seems to go to the mystery and heart of his music and what I read as concerns with process, time, place and causality." Stuart Broomer - liner notes to "The Geometry of Sentiment"

Jazz @ St John's Arts Centre - This Joint Is Jumpin' - The Life & Music of Fats Waller Starring John Petters & His Rhythm Thursday 25th April @8pm. tjp...@traditional-jazz.com £10
Britain's Ace Drummin' Man, John Petters, offers an evening of hot swinging music with "This Joint Is Jumpin'" - the life and music of Thomas 'Fats' Waller at St John's Arts Centre (St John's Walk, Market St. Old Harlow CM17 0AJ on Thursday (25th April) at 8pm. This concert is the first of a series of tributes which marks the 70th anniversary year of Waller's early death in 1943. Waller, born in 1904, was the son of an Abyssinian Baptist preacher, who thought jazz was the Devil's music and his son had no business trifling with it. Young Thomas was a larger than life character. His capacity for eating, drinking and womanising was matched only by his unique gifts as one of Harlem's premier Stride pianists. Waller was a prolific composer of popular, evergreen songs, a creative jazz vocalist and an outstanding comic.
His popularity in the '20s and '30s mirrored the superstardom enjoyed by today's celebrities. He was once hijacked from a nightclub, blindfolded and bundled into a car at gunpoint, by a bunch of heavies. Still with his eyes covered, he was marched into another club, sat at the piano and told to play. His host was the legendary gangster, Al Capone, who kept requesting, 'Ain't Misbehavin''. Fats earned enough money to buy a car that night.
For the Old Harlow session, John Petters has assembled a handpicked group of top musicians. Karl Hird, the amazing Australian clarinettist will co-star with former Acker Bilk cornet star, Ken Sims. Piano professor, Martin Litton - an expert on early jazz piano, will re-interpret Waller's flamboyant style, assisted by bass ace, Keith Donald. John Petters is well qualified to pay the music of Fats Waller, having worked and recorded with the late guitarist, Al Casey, who appeared on hundreds of 78rpm discs as a member of Fats Waller & His Rhythm in the '30s. 'This Joint Is Jumpin'' guarantees an evening of supreme enjoyment, hot jazz, and for those wishing to dance, an opportunity to jive and jitterbug.

History of Jazz in Essex - Do you have any Memories?
Essex on Tour is current undertaking research (led by Essex based musician Snowboy) into the History of Jazz in Essex- spanning back the last 70 years with the aim of creating an exhibition which will tour around the county and be hosted in the libraries. Project Manager Tony Morrison says “It’s an exciting project as we seek out and interview the musicians / promoters / venues that have played their part in the jazz scene across region over the last 60 years and though you wouldn’t necessary think it there have been some key people based in Essex that not only have been part of a local scene but also had an impact nationally”
The project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Essex County Council plus supported by National Jazz Archives (based in Loughton) and Essex Music Services and as well as the exhibition there will be performances by top jazz players at various events to help raise the profile of the exhibition featuring a launch at Chelmsford Library in September. So if anyone has an exciting story to tell or some information that may be of interest then they should contact project manager Tony on tony.m...@essex.gov.uk

Review: Marlene VerPlanck at Ronnie Scott's - Jazz Journal Int'l, March 17, 2013
Sally Evans-Darby finds that Marlene VerPlanck's sound is as fresh and fearless as ever at a packed afternoon performance at Ronnie Scott's, LondonConsidering the scope and longevity of Ms VerPlanck's career, it's hard to believe that she could still be singing with such verve, warmth, and indubitable sincerity. Yet her lunchtime concert at Ronnie Scott's on Sunday 17 March, part of her annual UK spring tour, was undeniable proof that this lady still swings. Supported by her excellent UK trio (Paul Morgan on bass, John Pearce on piano, Bobby Worth on drums), Ms VerPlanck delivered a set characterised by her signature audience rapport and deep, personal connection with every song she sang - which was a mix of well-known and lesser-known standards. It was a wet, grey afternoon in London and it seemed the audience - making up a full house - had huddled inside the cosy club against the lingering winter chill. And if it was warmth they were looking for, that's what they got.
From the opening number to the encore, Ms VerPlanck's set was made up of songs with a central theme - the youthful optimism of a first love. It's a theme that could easily stray into trite or corny waters, but not in Ms VerPlanck's hands. Each song was sang as if for the first time. Her delivery is indelibly as if each standard - its melody, its lyrics, its message - is a surprise even as she sings it; a gift to be unwrapped lovingly and shared with her rapt audience. One of her opening numbers, Fun To Be Fooled, an Arlen/Ira Gershwin composition, summed up Ms VerPlanck's way with a tune: a spritely sense of mischief ("fun to be kissed!"), and a completely convincing engagement with the lyric ("fun to exist!"). Jerome Kern's Let's Begin was similarly handled, with the teasing lyric "which is it going to be - love or gin?" eliciting appreciative chuckles from the audience. Another appealing feature of Marlene VerPlanck's shows is her inclusion of the often-neglected verse before the song's main refrain; a particular example in this set being Embraceable You, whose rarely performed verse colours the song to make it feel fresh and new.
The majority of the set was upbeat, with a swinging, toe-tapping tempo, but the couple of mournful ballads were also a treat. Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry in particular was an absorbingly sombre performance. The set also contained a couple of songs written by Ms VerPlanck's late husband, Billy VerPlanck, as well as tunes composed by "those New York piano bar players", including Murray Grand, who, as Ms VerPlanck wistfully put it, are "now all gone". Paul Morgan's bass work was another thoroughly captivating element of the set, characterised by his striking, strident tone and obvious rapport with the other players. "We're gonna make him work hard!" Ms VerPlanck declared on the Bernice Petkere number Close Your Eyes, and that he certainly did, with the first few lines of the song performed as a taut duet between bass and vocal.
The set ended with a thrilling race through the Lerner/Lane composition Come Back To Me, with Ms VerPlanck imbuing the lyric with a desperate, heartfelt urgency: "Blast your hide, hear my call / Must I fight City Hall? / Here and now, damn it all! / Come back to me!". As with all her performances, Ms VerPlanck scanned the room as she sang, drawing her audience into the lyric; and when she looked in your direction, it was hard not to believe she was singing directly to you. Marlene VerPlanck has an uncanny ability to catch at the truth of a lyric and make an old song sound new, and Sunday's concert was further extremely enjoyable testament to that. Here's wishing her many more years of performing.
The Duncan Fraser Big Band present:
'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase. The Band features some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK, who feature in Big Band bands such as NYJO, RAM Big Band & The Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.
3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
Many thanks!
