The Len Phillips Big Band return for the their monthly residency at the United Services Club, Main Road, Sidcup on 30th June with special guest Georgina Jackson. Georgina will be singing with the band as well as playing a couple of trumpet features. Great bar prices, free parking and no membership required. Trumpet required for the Mo Jazz Orchestra 18 piece big band. The real music from the Gatsby era will be recreated on Thursday (27th June @ 8pm) at St John's Arts Centre (St John's Walk, Market St. Old Harlow CM17 0AJ) when John Petters Gatsby Gang stomp into town. The Roarin' 20s was known as the jazz age - the days of the Flapper girl, bootleg booze, prohibition and hot jazz played in nightspots know as Speakeasies , under the control of such mobsters as Al Capone and Legs Diamond. Wild dances such as the 'Shimmy', the 'Varsity Drag' and the 'Blackbottom' were all the rage, but it was the 'Charleston' which captured the mood of the period.
The Jazz Age boomed in Chicago, when young Louis Armstrong left New Orleans to join King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band at the Lincoln Gardens in Chicago in 1923. The epicentre of the music moved east and New York's Harlem became THE place to be. Jazz greats Fats Waller and Duke Ellington held sway - the latter at the famous Cotton Club. This was the musical backdrop that F. Scott Fitzgerald had in mind when he penned 'The Great Gatsby'.
British audiences were given a jazz taster before the decade commenced with the arrival of New Orleans clarinettist, Sidney Bechet and the Original Dixieland Jass Band - five white musicians from the Crescent City, who appeared before King George V. Song hits such as 'Runnin' Wild', successfully revived by Marilyn Monroe in 'Some Like it Hot', 'Tiger Rag', 'Sweet Georgia Brown', 'Ain' She Sweet' , 'Dinah' and other evergreens will be on the musical menu at St John's.
Ex Harlow drummin' man and jazz historian, John Petters, who was featured in the BBC 4 TV documentary, 'Trad Jazz Britannia' last month, is well qualified to play the music of the Gatsby period. He toured and recorded with veteran Chicago jazz legends, Wild Bill Davison and Art Hodes, who both worked for Capone run clubs. Hodes wrote that Petters was, "carrying the torch we lit".
This hot band features the hot trumpet of Alan Gresty and the sizzling clarinet of Brian White. Trombonist, broadcaster and writer Mike Pointon, also featured in 'Trad Jazz Britannia' is one of the most respected musicians on the scene. Essex boy, Dave Browning will bring the authentic style of 20s Harlem Stride piano and Harlow bass ace will be on hand to cement a solid and swing rhythm section.

There is a Jam session on the first Thursday of each month in Colchester at The Bull, Crouch Street. They are lucky enough to have a house band that regularly features such great players as Bern Hodgekins (Bass player with Jazznights trio) and Mick Hutton (bass). Our attitude is that of inclusion and after a short set from the house band, we open the stage for jammers and singers. The Ipswich Jazz Collective meet once a month on a Friday to hold a jam session at the Golden Hind Pub on Nacton Road in Ipswich. They start at 7:30 with bass, drums, keyboard gear and a PA set up. Guitarists will need to bring their own amps. There's no entrance fee and all levels of player are catered for. Local bands also have the chance to do a set on their own. 'Jazz Jam with Rich Buddie' celebrated its first birthday in January. It has gone from strength to strength, and really is the place to be on a Monday Night in Norwich. Every week from 8pm. Rich Buddie aka Barry Wortley, Turk, Simon and special guests play traditional and funky tunes. Every one is welcome to come along to watch or bring their instruments and join in. Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. Matt Furness on drums drives the whole group - a veteran ... but still only 14! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail. Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set the tempo, agree the intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. Vocalist and trumpeter Georgina is resident singer at Ronnie Scott's and her latest album 'Watch What Happens' reached No 4 in the Jazz Charts. Georgina appears frequently on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night. Pete Long is jazz saxophonist with Jools Holland and has performed at Ronnie Scott's, The BBC Big Band and has worked with Lionel Ritchie, Sir Paul McCartney, Jane Horrocks and Sting to name but a few. The Sam Edwards Trio with Sam Edwards- piano, Andy Toleman - double bass & Martin 'Magic' Johnson - drums will be accompanying them for a magnificent evening of well known tunes and songs

17th July - Andrew & Ryan Linham Quintet
Andrew Linham - saxophones, Ryan Linham - trumpet, Rob Brockway - piano, Jason Simpson - double bass, Josh Law - drums. Andrew Linham is an exciting talented young saxophonist who has appeared several times at the Club in the Ken Turner Big Band and with Chris Neill's Infusion. Tonight he's appearing with his younger also highly talented trumpeter brother Ryan with his own quintet, performing well known jazz standards.
24th July - The Gary Wood Swing Quintet
The Quintet will swing through the American Songbook with ease and style. Gary Wood - trumpet & vocals, Dan Foster - saxes has played with The Pasadena Roof Orchestra & The London Jazz Orchestra. Chris Green - bass appears with numerous bands including The Memphis Belle Swing Orchestra. Ronnie Fenn's -drums life has taken him through pop, soul, rock and skiffle jazz. Roger Evans - keyboard has been playing jazz, pop and classical piano for many years. The Quintet's extensive repertoire is based around jazz standards, embracing the popular classics of Cole Porter, Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Hammerstein etc. etc.
31st July - Clive Burton & Stuart Henderson + Ted Beament Trio
Clive Burton - trombone & Stuart Henderson - trumpet & flugel horn, accompanied by Ted Beament - piano, Alan Morgan - double bass & Paul Budd - drums. Stuart was the lead trumpet player of Her Majesty's Household Division performing worldwide. Clive Burton has played alongside with the very best - George Chisholm, Kenny Baker, Duncan Lamont, Humphrey Lyttleton, Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk, Ken Colyer, Campbell Burnap and Digby Fairweather, Vic Ash, Alan Barnes and Bruce Adams.
7th August - Mervyn Wright Little Big Band + Mark Stratford
This 11 peice band will be playing all your big band favourites from Basie to ted Heath, Woody Herman to Glenn Miller etc. Mark Stratford will be performing from the Great American Songbook with the many tunes associated with Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and Dean Martin etc. Arrangements are all especially written to encapture the full sounds of big bands with all their harmonic content. You may even have the odd joke thrown in!
14th August - Simon Spillett + Ted Beament Trio
2011 British Jazz Award Winner for Tenor Saxophone Simon Spillett, having appeared at Ronnie Scott's and broadcast with his own band on BBC Radio, will be performing well known standards including Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Jerome Kern compositions with a sprinkling of ballads, and refreshing tempo changes. Ted Beament will be accompanying on piano along with Alan Morgan - double bass & Alan Clarke - drums.
21st August - Fiona Paige of The John Miller Orchestra
Fiona Paige has been known as "The Sweetheart of The John Miller Orchestra" for 25 years, but has also been a special guest with The Glenn Miller Memorial Orchestra and Louis Hoover on The Salute to Sinatra Tour. Fiona is at the heart of the great Modernaires numbers like 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' and 'Kalamazoo'. An ex-dancer, Fiona brings years of professionalism, energy and an extra dimension and definition to the term Big Band Singer. She is a show in herself and to see her is to love her !
28th August - Java Jam
At members' request we welcome back to the Club Java Jam with Sarah-Jane Hassell - vocals, Bonnie Hassell - vocals, Roger Lewin - piano/keyboard, John Wills - drums/vocals, Steve King - bass/vocals, Phil Brown - tenor saxophone/flute. We welcome back to the club Java Jam who create a fusion of Manhattan Transfer style jazz, easy listening music classics including Burt Bacharach, Cole Porter, George Gershwin with warmth, charm and elegance.
LIVE JAZZ AT NORTH WEALD VILLAGE HALL every month - usually the first Friday in the month and just £8 on the door and a start time of 8:30pm. The loose, spontaneous and elastic treatments that Miles' quintet gave Broadway song material in the 1960's are the inspiration and provide the repertoire for a band full of well-known names. Led by Award winning Simon Spillett on saxaphone with Trumpeter Henry Lowther who is widely regarded as the best among British brass players, and pianist John Critchinson, bassist Dave Green and drummer Trevor Tomkins form the most democratic of rhythm sections. This promises to be an exceptional evening of great jazz.

It has been said that since going solo in 1982 and hitting the roads, riding the rails, flying the skies and sailing the seas, Kent and Leadbessie have probably by now clocked up over two million miles together including over 71 overseas tours. Kent has a powerful playing technique that demands the audience's attention. With intricate finger picking and gracefully bottleneck glides he personifies what the blues is all about. Coupled in typical blues musician's style Kent tells stories of his youth, his adventures, his family and friends, the old and greats and much more. With an uplifting persona and crowd pleasing demeanor and, of course, his incredible musical proficiency, the man is known and loved the world over. He has listened to, hung out with, opened up for, traveled and played with most of the great Blues men and women his whole adult life. Robert Coull "Bobby" Wellins, born in Glasgow on 24 January 1936, is a Scottish tenor saxophonist best known for his collaboration with Stan Tracey on the seminal 1965 British jazz album Under Milk Wood. In a 1998 poll by Jazz UK magazine, readers chose this record as their all-time favourite British jazz album despite the thousands of records made in the intervening 33 years. Wellins studied alto saxophone and harmony with his father before moving to London in the mid-1950s. He was a member of Buddy Featherstonhaugh's quintet in the late 1950s, together with Kenny Wheeler and around that time also joined drummer Tony Crombie's Jazz Inc., where he first met up with pianist Tracey, and going on to join Tracey's quartet in the early 1960s a collaboration that lasts to this day. In the intervening time Bobby has had a varied career including periods of semi-retirement playing with many of the well-known performers on the British jazz scene. .

A red-hot band that's bound to get you moving and grooving! What could be more perfect for a Speakeasy Sunday? Rollo Started playing Blues at the age of seventeen having been inspired by his mentor Julius Junior. Twenty years on he has developed a rich, passionate and authentic blues voice. His valve amplified Harp playing is full of tone, style and energy. Working as a musician an actor and a dancer has made Rollo the consummate frontman, engaging with and enthusing audiences across Europe. The Tailshakers formed in 1998 with a vision to create a Blues band with an authentic 50's sound. They use vintage instruments, microphones and amplifiers to create a sound reminiscent of the Chess Recordings. Their dedication to blues and their attention to detail have produced a confident, stylish and highly entertaining act. The Tailshakers' show contains original material that takes in Chicago blues, boogaloo, Latin and swing, as well as some of the choicest blues players from the era.

Don Weller began learning clarinet at the age of 14, and although classically educated he began playing in Dixieland bands around the Croydon area. He later switched to tenor saxophone and played in Kathy Stobart's rehearsal band. In the 1970s his jazz-rock group Major Surgery played only Weller's compositions. This was followed by a quartet with drummer Bryan Spring. At the same time he worked regularly with pianist Stan Tracey, and also with Harry Beckett and in a quintet with Art Themen. Renowned for his versatility, he has played with artists such as Alan Price, Tina May and Charlie Hearnshaw. He appears as lead sax (with Tower of Power backing him on horns)on the instrumental track "Nascimento" of Cat Stevens' 1978 LP Back To Earth.
In 1981 he stood in for Michael Brecker when the Gil Evans Orchestra played at the Bracknell Jazz Festival, before touring the UK and recording with trumpeter, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, added on to the Weller/Spring Quartet. He also played and recorded with Evans' British Orchestra in 1983. Also in the 1980s, together with his friend and fellow tenor sax Dick Morrissey, Weller was a regular member of Rocket 88, the boogie-woogie fun band set up by Ian "Stu" Stewart and Bob Hall, appearing on the band's only album. He has been involved with the films Absolute Beginners and Stormy Monday both as performer and composer. He won the 'Top Tenor' award in 1994, 1996 and 1998.[clarification needed] He formed a big band to perform his "Pennine Suite" at the 1996 Appleby Jazz Festival, and since then the band has regularly appeared at other jazz festivals. A recent project is his 'Electric Jazz Octet'.

Chelmsford Jazz Club presents 10 or 11 concerts a year at the Cramphorn Theatre, Fairfield Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1JG (next to the Civic Theatre). The majority of concerts are held on Sundays at lunchtime, although in the summer months some are held in the evening. The jazz presented by the club is generally mainstream and modern and the club is justly proud of the quality of the musicians, British, European and American, who appear. For an annual subscription of £8.00 (£14.00 joint) members are entitled to a £4.00 reduction on normal ticket prices, and early notice of concerts. A monthly newsletter passes on information about our own club, as well as items of interest about other local venues. BERKHAMSTED JAZZ . We present live jazz of all kinds regularly for a listening audience in a relaxed club atmosphere, with a reasonably priced licensed bar. We welcome all ages with cncessionaryprices for members, children and students. All concerts are £10 for members and Dacorum Card holders, and £13 for visitors and guests.
We are firmly established as one of the premier jazz venues in the South East of England, attracting the best of musical talent from a wide area. We frequently have full houses for our events so it is worthwhile to book early. Our belief is that jazz is for enjoyment and we wish to encourage listeners to all the different elements that jazz comprises. We are neither a ‘Traditional
Jazz’ club, nor a ‘Modern Jazz’ club; we try to include as many facets of jazz as possible in our programme. For over 50 years, Dave Brubeck was a giant of American jazz, exciting millions of fans with his inimitable improvisation and rhythms. In the 70s and 80s his sons Darius, Chris and Dan - all fine musicians in their own right - recorded and toured worldwide with Dave as Two Generations of Brubeck and The New Brubeck Quartet. Now, following the death of their father in December last year, they have come together to play the music that made him a legend of modern jazz. With special guest British saxophonist Dave O'Higgins, this "Brubecks Play Brubeck" concert extraordinary evening of music will include famous Brubeck classics like Take Five and Blue Rondo a La Turk, as well as standard tunes associated with Dave and a few of their own popular compositions.

On 6th July the Rotary Club of Ingatestone is holding the 17th 'Summer Evening Jazz' in the grounds of Ingatestone Hall. Originally run by the former Shenfield and Hutton Rotary Club, with the support of sponsors and ticket sales, this popular event has amassed over £131,789 from the previous sixteen years. The gates open at 5.45pm and the concert begins at 6.15pm. Accompanied children under 17 are admitted free, and there is free car parking. Admission is £13.00 by ticket and £15 at the gate (if available).
The continued generosity of Lord Petre allows approximately 1000 of the paying public to enjoy the beautiful setting of Ingatestone Hall. Every year people bring their families and their picnics, and settle down to listen to an evening of classic New Orleans jazz. This is provided by the Frog Island Jazz Band and Bob Dwyer's Hot Seven. This year a licensed bar will be run by Brentwood Brewing Company with real ales on tap, so no need to bring your own drinks. In addition, hot dog, coffee and ice cream stalls will only add to the enjoyment for all ages! A raffle is held during the evening and excellent quality prizes are on offer. Another highlight is the Umbrella Parade which simulates a New Orleans wake procession, with the bands leading the 'mourners' with their gaily decorated umbrellas around the Hall gardens. Three prizes are awarded to the adult, child and child under 5, who have the best decorated brollies.
Once again, the chosen charities this year are the Farleigh and Saint Francis Hospices, Essex St. John Ambulance and other Rotary worthy causes. The Hospices have been providing care to thousands of people with cancer and life limiting illnesses across Essex for many years. It is only through the generosity of the people of Essex that they are able to continue to provide this essential service.

Lavenham Lazy Jazz Sunday Afternoon, 25th August 2013 1.30 to 3.30pm
As part of its Carnival celebrations in 2013, live Jazz will be playing all Sunday afternoon on the village Playing Fields. Entry is free and people are being encouraged to come with a picnic and just chill-ax for a couple of hours in an otherwise hectic life. Bring a picnic or visit our award winning Farmers Market in the Village Hall across the road (the market is open from midday) and buy some fresh food and wine to take along. The village boasts four pubs (Swan, Cock, Greyhound and Angel) and several restaurants (all have won awards) as well as over 40 shops that will be open on Sunday, selling everything from antiques to anchovies.
Pimms and lemonade, strawberries, ice cream and crepes will be on sale at the Playing Fields with proceeds to the local school. There are covered marquees if its gets wet (even in August!) but otherwise come and enjoy a lazy afternoon in a picturesque and magical medieval village that was recently used as Godric's Hollow in the Harry Potter movies, take in the shops, market, sights and museums, then relax to the Jazz. John Petters is promoting London Louis Armstrong Riverboat Shuffle on the Dixie Queen Sat 7th September - a trip along the river, under Tower Bridge, towards Westminster and back out towards the Thames barrier (tides permitting) with trad jazz performances on two decks, with adequate dancing and seating areas for everyone. The number of tickets sold will be limited in order that everyone can be seated. The boat departs at 14:00 from Tower Pier, returning a 17:00. There will be two bars on board, but no food, so you may bring picnics. Two sizzling hot, traditional jazz bands - John Petters New Orleans All Stars and Trefor Williams Usual Suspects. Tickets are just £29.50 per person. If you or your club can get a party of 10 or more, they can do a special price.

New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy - The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all 'tools of the trade'.

History of Jazz in Essex - Do you have any Memories?
Essex on Tour is current undertaking research (led by Essex based musician Snowboy) into the History of Jazz in Essex- spanning back the last 70 years with the aim of creating an exhibition which will tour around the county and be hosted in the libraries. Project Manager Tony Morrison says “It’s an exciting project as we seek out and interview the musicians / promoters / venues that have played their part in the jazz scene across region over the last 60 years and though you wouldn’t necessary think it there have been some key people based in Essex that not only have been part of a local scene but also had an impact nationally”
The project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Essex County Council plus supported by National Jazz Archives (based in Loughton) and Essex Music Services and as well as the exhibition there will be performances by top jazz players at various events to help raise the profile of the exhibition featuring a launch at Chelmsford Library in September. The Hertfordshire Music Service and North Herts Youth Jazz run the North Herts Youth Jazz Big Band
The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings, term time, at The North Herts Music School, Highbury House, Highbury Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 9RU 01462 434052. Rehearsals run from 1715 to 1845. Up to age 19 or older if in full time education. We would welcome interest from rhythm section, horn section players and singers. Musicians of grade 5 standard and upwards. Either acoustic or electric bass players. Please be prepared to read charts too! Improvisers will be especially welcome but guidance and instruction will be given to all who wish it. We would also like to encourage composers to come along and write for this group. This band will perform at least once in public each term to promote the playing of jazz amoung young people and perform a wide range of jazz repertoire, from Duke Ellington to Mark Lockheart. There is a termly fee for membership, though a remission of fees scheme is operated by the Hertfordshire Music Service, subject to terms and conditions.
And especially for those of you with children/grandchildren still in school, we would like to bring to your attention the excellent music services and facilities provided by Essex Music Services. They are part of Essex County Council and provide " Quality instrumental tuition and workshops to school and colleges in Essex, covering all major orchestral and band instruments and musical styles" " The opportunity for young people to perform in many youth orchestras and choirs " and " Concerts throughout the county where the groups showcase their talents."
One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country's leading jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition. He has recorded and toured with Radiohead and appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. He is also the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz. Just a reminder - I am sure most of you already listen in, but if you weren't aware of it you really should be listening to jazz broadcaster of the year Paul Barnes's show The Late Paul Barnes. Those of you who have been involved with youth jazz in Essex in the last ten years or so will probably have come across Jon Eno, a truly inspirational teacher who developed and ran Young Essex Jazz. Jon is now doing great things with youth music in the Midlands, and I am pleased to be able to let you know that he has been nominated for a Parliamentary award for services to jazz education - well done Jon, very richly deserved! 'The Da Capo Concert Band in Whetstone, Barnet is looking for new players. We particularly need brass players but woodwind players are also welcome. We play a varied wind band repertoire, including specialist wind band music from the likes of Philip Sparke as well as medleys of show-tunes, popular marches; jazz and big band pieces; and themes from film and television. Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. For jazz fans there is a new blog which is well worth reading, written by Josh Jennings. The British Jazz Blog aims to celebrate, and give a platform to, the fantastic British jazz scene. 3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
