Bass player wanted (and we aren't talking about the usual Crimewatch appeals here!).

Southend Jazz Co-operative needs a bass player! We are a jazz workshop that meets every Saturday morning in St Michaels Church Hall in Leigh-on-Sea from 10 am to 1 pm. There is an average attendance of 20 aspiring jazz players (mostly saxes) with varying experience from beginners to advanced players, but at the very least everybody knows how to follow lead sheets and chords, and jazz etiquette in general, for example playing fours. The focus of the co-op is on the development of improvising skills with an extensive jazz and standards repertoire. The Saturday sessions blend regular tuition with small group playing. A feature of the Co-op are the masterclasses from top professionals, giving the opportunity to play with the great names of British Jazz. Our recent guests have included Andy Cleyndert, Dave Cliff, Alan Barnes, Stan Sulzmann, Steve Waterman and Art Themen. Other sessions are taken by club members.

We have several harmony players, mostly very competent guitarists, and our drummer runs the club, so we always have a full rhythm section - except, now we are looking for a bass player! This is an wonderful opportunity for a bass player to hone skills, learn from the pros, and enjoy a morning's jazz. Please check out the Co-op at the website on www.southendjazzco-op.co.uk. If you are interested give Richard Dray a ring on 01268 781700 for a chat or email him at richar...@ymail.com

New dates announced for Giant Steps Jazz weekends with Mark Bassey at Missenden Abbey, Great Missenden, Bucks, HP16 0BD.

The latest Missenden Abbey adult learning catalogue for 2011 / 2012 has on page 77 a whole new curriculum called Performance, which now comprises our Jazz weekends and also a new Rock group and new singing workshops. Please visit the website to see the new dates, and I would ask you to book through Giant Steps Jazz website - even if you are a returning attendee and know the phone number for The Abbey to manage who is booking and what instrument they play. Numbers for piano, drums, bass and guitar have to be limited but also the total number of people in the group. Last they had 18 players, which was just a little too many, and they have decided to aim for a group size of about 12 in future. Some of the courses book-up quickly but it's perfectly OK to book well in advance. Simply choose to pay by credit card and your booking will be transmitted electronically to Rosa Maria's team, who will phone you and ask for a small credit card deposit. They then take the full amount two weeks before the event. www.giantstepsjazz.com

The Grapevine magazine, the most comprehensive FREE what's on guide in East Anglia. is going to be devoting a monthly jazz page trying to promote jazz to a wider and younger audience. Including a jazz gig round up every third month.

The Frank Griffith Big Band released their debut CD on 20 July 2011.

The big band returns! With its debut CD, Holland Park Non-Stop on the HEPJAZZ label, this powerful band shows the genre is alive and kicking. Under the leadership of US composer, arranger and reedsman Frank Griffith, the band displays its affection for the music's past while sounding decidedly fresh and contemporary. Bandleader Frank Griffith has been resident in the UK since 1996. He has worked with Mel Torme, Ron Carter, Jon Hendricks, Lionel Hampton, Mel Lewis, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, amongst many others. His remarkable breadth of experience shows in his skilled and evocative arranging and well as in his authoritative soloing on tenor sax and clarinet. Internationally acclaimed vocalist Tina May appears on three tracks. One is a brand new treatment of Jimmy Van Heusen's classic, Oh You Crazy Moon, given a fresh coat of paint by Griffith as requested by label boss, Alastair Robertson - and Tina's spirited and swaggering delivery really does send it into lunar orbit. Other standout solo contributions include those from trumpeters, Steve Fishwick and Freddie Gavita; Swedish trombonist, Mattias Eskilsson and leading UK saxophonists, Matt Wates and Karen Sharp. Recent Jazz Parliamentry Award Winner, pianist, John Turville leads a rhythm section, joined by drummer, Matt Home and bassist, Spencer Brown.Stay tuned for news of our upcoming launch event at Ronnie Scotts. To purchase a copy of Holland Park Non-Stop please logon to www.frank.griffith.co.uk or www.hepjazz.com and click on New Issues.
"Frank Griffith's work has delighted me" - the late Sir John Dankworth
"Griffith has loosely modelled his band on the sonorous harmonies and interlocking riffs of the 1950s with Gil Evans particularly favoured" Mike Hobart- The Financial Times

I know quite a few of our subscribers have been on one of Michael Garrick's wonderful courses. Chris has been on several now, and always thoroughly enjoyed them. For those of you musicians who haven't yet been to one: what's stopping you? It is a fantastic residential course in a beautiful setting, with amazing tutors and a bunch of the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. I would highly recommend these courses to anyone who wants to improve their musicianship and have a great time into the bargain. For more information and for bookings please go to www.jazzacademy.co.uk.

After Christmas - Winter Jazz! What happens between Christmas and New Year, apart from more eating, more drinking and more insufferable relatives?! (If you really want to stay together though, bring them along at the reduced friends and relations rate). WINTER JAZZ is the answer - an oasis of cool excitement for all instrumentalists and vocalists at Beechwood between Chrismas & New Year. And of course you can find out more about Michael and buy his music from his website: www.michaelgarrick.co.uk.

I am sure most of you already listen in, but if you weren't aware of it you really should be listening to jazz broadcaster of the year Paul Barnes's show The Late Paul Barnes. The show is broadcast each Saturday between 11pm and 1am on the following BBC stations: Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Cambridgeshire, Northampton and 3CR (Beds, Bucks, Herts). And for those of you who aren't night owls, thanks to the wonders of modern technology you can "listen again" any time, anywhere by going to: www.bbc.co.uk/norfolk/programmes/schedules

Music For Baby has been started by professional musicians who wanted to create the perfect soundtrack to their baby's life. Collections of music have been recorded for different activities and to support baby's development, whilst introducing baby to a range of real musical instruments. The music will contain elements that are proven to be winners with children – the familiar nursery rhymes and lullabies for example, or the use of repetition and rhythmic emphasis, but crucially the music will also contain real instruments with real musicians performing on them rather than entirely synthetic sounds. It will also contain intelligent arrangements and will introduce a range of different styles designed to broaden the musical palate. This should also mean adults are equally able to enjoy the music, even if it is the umpteenth play through ("again again" is afamiliar cry!).To learn more and listen to samples please go to www.musicforbaby.co.uk

And especially for those of you with children/grandchildren still in school, or those with an interest in promoting music amongst our youth, we would like to bring to your attention the excellent music services and facilities provided by Essex Music Services. They are part of Essex County Council and provide:
" Quality instrumental tuition and workshops to school and colleges in Essex, covering all major orchestral and band instruments and musical styles"
" The opportunity for young people to perform in many youth orchestras and choirs "
" Concerts throughout the county where the groups showcase their talents."

One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) which is for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country's leading jazz musicians. Martin is a member of numerous orchestra and quintets and was one of the leading lights in establishing the Heathcote Arms 344 Grove Green Road Leytonstone London E11 4EA as a prime venue for jazz in London, attracting the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Don Weller and other renowned jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition including the MCPS Best Original Composition Award in the BBC Big Band Contest. He has recorded and toured with Radiohead and appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. He is also the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz.

Tickets for Essex Music Services' Jazz concerts may be purchased by calling 01206 798788 for tickets or email beverley...@essex.gov.uk

For those of you familiar with the Buckhurst Hill Jam (www.jazzjam.co.uk) and Infusion (www.infusionband.co.uk), both Josh (drums) and Chris (piano) are avid EYJO members (Chris plays tenor sax at EYJO though, not piano). You are welcome to speak to them if you want an inside view of this outstanding facility.

Guitarist Martin Shepherd, a recent regular at the Buckhurst Hill jam, has launched Jazz Zone, a CD of self-penned tunes covering bebop and Latin styles plus an altered blues. The obvious tonal reference points are George Benson and Wes Montgomery. The improvisations are of a high standard - Martin has a light touch and plays through the changes well. Drums and percussion are programmed but sound convincing. One for the car? Martin is offering Jazz Zone to newsletter subscribers for just £6 including postage and packing and an information sheet - a 33% discount on the store price. For further information, e-mail Martin at mp.s...@virgin.net Those who wish to listen first should go to the MySpace home page and type martinshepherdguitar into the 'find members' box.
