Back when Radio 2 played swing music in its daily schedule, the superbly gifted saxophonist, Trevor Whiting landed a couple of broadcasts for a superb little combo which specialised in 1940s small group Swing. As a spin-off Trevor has put together a special programme saluting some of the great Texan Tenor sax players, who specialised in a driving, booting, fiery sound during the late 1930s and early 1940s. People like Illinois Jacquet, famous for his solo on Lionel Hampton's hit jive tune, 'Flying Home', or Herschel Evans, the tragic young stable mate of Lester Young in Count Basie's Orchestra. Arnett Cobb, another powerhouse player, who in later years, at the Alexandra Palace Jazz Festival in London, followed a lightning speed solo by some young schooled saxophonist, by staggering to his feet on his crutches, playing one note and showing who was boss. Trevor introduced this show at the recent Louis Armstrong Celebration Festival at Bracklesham Bay to great applause and brings it to St John's Arts Centre (St John's Walk, Market St. Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ) on Thursday 25th October at 8PM
Born in 1959, the year that pioneer saxophonists Sidney Bechet and Lester Young died, Trevor grew up with the sound of jazz in his head. He took up clarinet and taught himself the rudiments of music. He soon acquired a straight soprano saxophone and fell under the influence of New Orleanian, Bechet. A little later, he began to absorb such swing era players as Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster, from Duke Ellington's Orchestra. His talents were quickly recognised and record dates followed with American blues piano legend, Art Hodes and cornetist, Wild Bill Davison. He later recorded with Acker Bilk and was a member of the Chris Barber band for nearly two years. He was featured on the debut album by vocalist Clare Teal. Trevor's first love is, however the mid period of jazz when the music was called 'Swing'. He is universally acknowledged as one of the top interpreters of this genre.
Joining Trevor at St John's will be veteran guitarist, Jim Douglas, who was a member of the famous Alex Welsh band for many years. He appeared regularly on radio and television during the '60s alongside such jazz originals as Henry Red Allen. A 'Jazz 625' show - an early transmission by BBC2, luckily exists and Jim can be seen creating the perfect rhythm as well as a number highly creative solos. Ex-George Melly piano star, J J Vinten returns to join the rhythm section and add his unique blues based keyboard style to the band. J J has become a popular and regular visitor to St John's over the past few years and has many devotees amongst the regulars. Harlow bass ace, Keith Donald and ex Harlow drummin' man John Petters will complete the line-up which is expected to produce some highly charged, exciting music.

Anyone at at least a moderate level will get a chance to join in - either on a number they chose or with other players, depending on the numbers. The essentials are commitment, enthusiasm and a passion for swinging jazz! Newcomers can choose a number from the common Real Books or bring charts. Good reading is not essential but a good jazz ear is. Brendan leads from a great electric upright bass, with the famous Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline with more than an echo of Steffan Grappelli; Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can even sell you the Real Books in C Eb and Bb, at better prices than retail. On drums is Matt Furness who drives the whole group - a veteran of many years ... but still only 14!
Brendan will invite each jammer to play: choose the number; set the tempo; agree with Brendan the intro - count in, four bars or whatever; then play the head and take the first solo, followed by Mark and Lee each with their own solo chorus, before you lead the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. The show is available on line worldwide for 7 days via the BBC's 'Listen again' facility..

24th - A Stephane Grappelli & Django Reinhardt inspired evening with Andy Aitchison, Nils Solberg, Jeff Green & Alan Morgan
Andy Aitchison started to play the guitar when he was about 13. He soon figured out that he could also do it on the violin too. Shortly afterwards he heard a recording of Stephane Grappelli & Django Reinhardt and has loved the sound of their music ever since! As a member of The Kimbara Brothers, he toured hot club music all over the UK for some years as well as performing with John Etheridge, Tina May, Le Jazz, Fapy Lafertin, Angelo Debarre and many more. In the 90's he formed & recorded with 'The Morellos'. Over the past few years, Andy has worked with the celebrated gypsy guitar master, Lollo Meier, touring in the UK and Europe. More recently still, he has worked with Lollo in Italy with Lollo and numerous Italian players including Jacopo Martini and Attilio Troiano (Winner of 2010 Italian Jazz Newcomer award). The influences of Artie Shaw and Stephane Grappelli can be heard in Andy's playing - their unparalleled sense of swing, technical excellence and stylish arrangements are second to none. Andy has sought to combine these with the soulful guitar sounds of Peter Green and BB King in playing many UK Festivals. Nils Solberg performs on intimately acoustic or amplified guitar, either solo or in larger combinations, playing latin, traditional, mainstream and gypsy jazz to big band swing. These routines (very rarely seen today) have been adapted by Richard to perfection.

John Seeley's Saxophone Choir
The saxophone choir is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price.
Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone choir music, with a focus on classical music, ranging from G.Palestrina to Eric Whitacre. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion.
The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning, posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

New for September 2012! The Hertfordshire Music Service and North Herts Youth Jazz launch the North Herts Youth Jazz Big Band
The band will rehearse on Tuesday evenings (during term time only) at The North Herts Music School, Highbury House, Highbury Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 9RU 01462 434052. Rehearsals will run from 1715 to 1845. Up to age 19 or older if in full time education. Previously the members of this band rehearsed as two smaller but distinct groups in Hitchin and Stevenage. Now we have brought them together and the result will be awesome! (See/hear a fortaste of this group at the Rhythms of The World Festival, Hitchin, July 14th, 1200pm Main Stage)
We would welcome interest from rhythm section, horn section players and singers. Musicians of grade 5 standard and upwards. Either acoustic or electric bass players. Please be prepared to read charts too! Improvisers will be especially welcome but guidance and instruction will be given to all who wish it. We would also like to encourage composers to come along and write for this group.
This band will perform at least once in public each term. It's philoshophy is to promote the playing of jazz amoung young people and perform a wide range of jazz repertoire, from Duke Ellington to Mark Lockheart. There is a termly fee for membership, though a remission of fees scheme is operated by the Hertfordshire Music Service, subject to terms and conditions.
And especially for those of you with children/grandchildren still in school, or those with an interest in promoting music amongst our youth, we would like to bring to your attention the excellent music services and facilities provided by Essex Music Services. They are part of Essex County Council and provide " Quality instrumental tuition and workshops to school and colleges in Essex, covering all major orchestral and band instruments and musical styles" " The opportunity for young people to perform in many youth orchestras and choirs " and " Concerts throughout the county where the groups showcase their talents."
One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) which is for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country's leading jazz musicians. He is a member of numerous orchestra and quintets and was one of the leading lights in establishing the Heathcote Arms 344 Grove Green Road Leytonstone London E11 4EA as a prime venue for jazz in London, attracting many renowned jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition including the MCPS Best Original Composition Award in the BBC Big Band Contest. He has recorded and toured with Radiohead and appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. He is also the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz.
Tickets for Essex Music Services' Jazz concerts may be purchased by calling 01206 798788 for tickets or email beverley...@essex.gov.uk

The Duncan Fraser Big Band present:
'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase. The Band features some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK, who feature in Big Band bands such as NYJO, RAM Big Band & The Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

The Eastbury Concert Band who meet every Friday evening at Bower Hall, Havering-Atte-Bower, near Romford, Essex. are looking for new members, whatever the instrument.
The standard of the band is getting better all the time and it is mainly due to the increase in members and the effort that they put in at rehearsals, so don't let this put you off coming because these 2 situations can only help you get better, if , for example, you are in the position that you haven't played for a long time or you don't think you are good enough.
Playing along with all the other members of the band is one of the best ways of practicing. We do have one or two instruments that we could loan out but don't rely on this as we do not have many; it is better that you have your own instrument. Why not give me, Lance, a ring? Trombonist Wanted - The biggest problem with running a big band is finding a replacement when a trombonist leaves. This summer the lead trombonist of Michael Kilpatrick's band will be leaving, and he is desperate to do whatever he can to expand his network of contacts across the region in the hope that it might lead to the name of a trombone who is keen and available to join as a regular in his orchestra. Anyone interested or who knows someone who might be interested please contact him at the email address below. He would be most very grateful!

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

The Grapevine Magazine, the most comprehensive FREE what's on guide in East Anglia. is going to be devoting a monthly jazz page trying to promote jazz to a wider and younger audience. Including a jazz gig round up every third month.
For jazz fans there is a new blog which is well worth reading, written by Josh Jennings. The British Jazz Blog aims to celebrate, and give a platform to, the fantastic British jazz scene. Focusing on the contemporary side of the genre, the articles are written in a personal, informal manner, ideal for getting people from outside of the genre just as excited about the music as hardcore fans of jazz! www.britishjazzblog.com
And for those of you looking for a great place for a holiday (with its regular jazz festivals etc) in the magical heart of France - La Bourboule is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Puy de Dome - or even if you're looking to buy a property in the area (price 192,000 euros). You can see the property at its website on www.villa-les-princes.com. The price of your holiday accommodation will be refunded upon purchase! This area is not only beautiful year round but has a distinct and different personality for each season. In addition, during school holiday periods, La Bourboule does its best to justify its designation as a special family resort by providing many additional activities, indoors and out, to ensure that even the youngest member of the family has a wonderful time

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.
3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
Many thanks!
