History of Jazz in Essex – Do you have any Memories?

Essex on Tour is current undertaking research (led by Essex based musician Snowboy) into the History of Jazz in Essex- spanning back the last 70 years with the aim of creating an exhibition which will tour around the county and be hosted in the libraries. Project Manager Tony Morrison says “It’s an exciting project as we seek out and interview the musicians / promoters / venues that have played their part in the jazz scene across region over the last 60 years and though you wouldn’t necessary think it there have been some key people based in Essex that not only have been part of a local scene but also had an impact nationally”

The project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Essex County Council plus supported by National Jazz Archives (based in Loughton) and Essex Music Services and as well as the exhibition there will be performances by top jazz players at various events to help raise the profile of the exhibition featuring a launch at Chelmsford Library in September. So if anyone has an exciting story to tell or some information that may be of interest then they should contact project manager Tony on tony.m...@essex.gov.uk

Back at the club with his latest trio, Steve has invited the superb Nigel Hitchcock to join them. Steve has a formidable background, performing with heavyweights like Elvin Jones, Peter King, Alan Skidmore, Phil Woods, Benny Golson and he recently became a member of the European Jazz Ensemble. A great way to open our new season, come and check out this great pianist. After leaving school at sixteen, and already a seasoned professional, Nigel Hitchcock walked straight into the London session scene, recording TV jingles, movie soundtracks and pop solos, as he still does today. In 1989, Nigel joined the contemporary saxophone quartet 'Itchy Fingers' and toured Europe and South-East Asia with them. During the 90?s Nigel toured extensively with artists like Tom Jones and Wet,Wet,Wet. In 2004 Nigel moved to the Isle of Skye and was soon travelling across Scotland, playing with bagpipes and fiddles in a rock context and other highland bands. In 2009 Nigel moved to the grounds of an old castle on the river at Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, which gave him the inspiration to continue writing and recording.
Since arriving back in the south in late 2011 Nigel has performed on 'The Voice' with the winner Leanne Mitchell, toured with George Michael, recorded and gigged with Mark Knopfler, and recorded a classical alto sax concerto for Brian Byrne's 'Tales From The Walled City'.

The regular 'Norwich jazzjam', goes from strength to strength, reports fan and EDP arts reviewer, Roger Haywood. This gig takes place every Monday from 8.30pm at The Cottage pub in Norwich www.jazzjam.org.uk . Players from across Norfolk (and some from even further afield) enjoy playing the tunes of their choice backed by what has been rated as one of the finest small bands in the region.

Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with the celebrated Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. On drums is Matt Furness who drives the whole group - a veteran of many years ... but still only 14! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can even sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail.
The Cottage is CAMRA's award winning city pub. Whether you want to jam or just listen, you will get a warm welcome. The pub offers good food plus a range of real ales, great Belgian beers, single malts .... or soft drinks, teas and coffees for those driving!!! www.thecottagenorwich.co.uk
All players get a chance to show their skills; fair competence is the minimum requirement but the essentials are commitment, improvising skills and a passion for swinging jazz! Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set the tempo, agree the intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. The show is available on line worldwide for 7 days via the BBC's 'Listen again' facility. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx

Andy Aitchison, Nils Solberg, Jeff Green & Alan Morgan. Andy Atchison started to play 13. He soon figured out that he could also do it on the violin too. www.tommasostarace.com

He has performed with some of the most respected jazz musicians including Billy Cobham, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Jim Mullen, Jonathan Gee, Paolo Pellegatti, Gianni Giudici. 12th April - The Fugitives: www.thefugitives.co.uk

Terry Boon - vocals, bass, guitar; Keith Harris - guitar, slide Guitar, harmonica, vocals; John Andreotti - guitar, vocals and Ken Shillingford - Drums

At the risk of repeating ourselves yet again another fantastic band returns to Marigolds by popular demand. The Fugitives repertoire includes songs that span the whole genre of blues music whether that is country blues from the 20's and 30's, Chicago and Delta blues from the 40's and 50's, right through the 60's to more recent songs that might take their fancy. The band members met sometime in the 70s and with various other musicians formed such 'miscellaneous' groups as "Eddie and the Dentures" and "The Human Jangle" before forming "Standing Flat". We are reliably informed that the latter was a band much appreciated by John Peel. The "Outsyders" followed, playing all their own music before the lads returned to the music that they love doing, the Blues. Often people in the audience, not versed in the Blues, are heard to say, "We didn't think we liked the blues but this is somehow different and we've had a great time," and this is no less true of the Fugitives performances. Don't miss them.

26th April - The Dave O'Higgins Quartet http://www.daveohiggins.com

Dave O'Higgins is a popular and well-known figure on the international jazz scene, having recorded numerous albums as leader with various lineups as well as featuring on other bands discs. He cut his teeth with NYJO and as always has played with far too many renowned jazz artists to list here both throughout the UK and all over the world. It has been said that he is one of the most vigorously compelling tenor players on the UK scene drawing on the influences of Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Dexter Gordon and many others but maintaining his individuality in playing unpretentious, accessible, no-nonsense acoustic jazz addressed with skillfully controlled energy. In his home city, London, Dave is a regular guest with the house band at Ronnie Scott's and plays every month at the 606 Club in Chelsea with his quartet. He also teaches saxophone, harmony and improvisation at the London Centre for Contemporary Music, benefitting swathes of up and coming young musicians with his experience!

Sun 7 Apr - THE LYRIC TRIO Plays the last music of Michael Garrick. Admission £7 / £6 (concession)

Before his death in 2011, the great Michael Garrick's final band was The Lyric Ensemble. In singer Nette Robinson, he found a muse with which to indulge his love of poetry and music, revelling in her ability and eagerness to sing whatever melody his mind could conjure. Here Robinson performs his final work with the sublime Nikki Iles (piano) and Tony Woods (saxes/alto clarinet), fusing Ellington style swing with the words of Shakespeare, Browning, Blake and Tin-Tun-Ling.

"The cool-voiced and clearly enunciating Robinson caresses lyrics…Woods supplies elegant saxophone colour and bite…striking", Jazz Journal
"Possessing the smoothest of timbres, Robinson's voice is one you could never tire of listening to...rich in subtle emotions and moods...a little gem", Jazzwise magazine
" A gorgeous valediction for the late pianist", Jazz UK
"A formidable UK jazz presence rising to her full height", the Guardian on Nikki Iles.

And especially for those of you with children/grandchildren still in school, or those with an interest in promoting music amongst our youth, we would like to bring to your attention the excellent music services and facilities provided by Essex Music Services. The Duncan Fraser Big Band present:

'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase. The Band features some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK, who feature in Big Band bands such as NYJO, RAM Big Band & The Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

Look at www.vintagefestival.co.uk which looks like huge fun and includes James Langton and his Solid Senders. James (erstwhile front-man and vocalist with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra) now lives in New York but makes an occasional foray back to Blighty to front this sensational band.
For much more news, articles, laughs and occasional controversy (ahem), why not subscribe to the Tony Jacobs & Friends Newsletter. Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!

Dick Pearce Quartet plays Herts Jazz Club from 8pm-10.30 pm Sunday 14 April 2013 at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City. Tickets: JUST £5 for students and under-21s; £11 advance; £13 at the door; £8 members. Book online at http://www.hawthornetheatre.co.uk/whatsonstage.html

Dick first emerged on London's jazz scene in the early 1970s. Since then, his sound and his approach to improvisation have enhanced many jazz groups, TV jingles and studio recordings. A lyrical post-bop trumpeter, inspired by Miles Davis and Freddy Hubbard. Dick Pearce began his performing career with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, but also worked with Graham Collier, Mike Westbrook, Keith Tippett, Ken Hyder and many others in the 1970s, when he was in his twenties. His front-line partnership with Ronnie Scott in the latter's band in the 1980s and 1990s, plus his playing with his own band and those of Jack Sharpe, Don Rendell and Peter King, made him one the UK's first-call trumpeters.

History of Jazz in Essex - Do you have any Memories?

Bob Martin (alto sax), Steve Fishwick (trumpet & flugel), Mike Gorman (piano), Geoff Gascoyne (bass), Clive Fenner (drums)
Alto giant Bob Martin hails from Atlantic City, USA and studied at Berklee College before spending four years on the road as one of the featured saxophonists in the Buddy Rich Big Band. He went on to perform with many of the greats: Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Ekstine, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Sammy Davis Jnr. Bob is a wonderfully fluent and inventive alto sax player in the classic hard bop style with superb technique and control of the instrument. Resident in the UK since 1997, he has worked with many of our top names including a lengthy spell with the Frank Griffith Nonet. Tonight he teams with fellow Nonet player, the ever popular Steve Fishwick on trumpet. "Martin's solos had a pure, vital sound. We were swept along by the urgency of his phrases - fierce, fast notes in fragile delicate patterns, lasting for only seconds, smooth as silk on glass. Bebop phrases tend to start and end in unexpected places in the bar - Martin would pause with eyes closed and wait for the notes to come to him like a visitation." - Sebastian Scotney, London Jazz Blog.

Dave O' Higgins sax, Grant Windsor keyboards, Jeremy Brown on bass and Chris Draper drums.
