Hi everyone:
I have an es 175 with flatwounds and just wondering if there is an optimal distance from the pickup to the strings on the pickup closest to the neck (I don't use the other pickup). I strive for a rich mellow tone.
thanks for any input!
John

HI, In my opinion I have to take the guitar out in a live band situation
to find the optimal setting. Eveness of sound across the strings and
feedback issues on lower strings are taken into consideration.

I think it is a matter of personal taste when dialing in the neck pick up .
In my case I do a lot of picking right above the neck pick up since I like the way it sounds , the thing is I use a very thick pick and I have noticed that if I set my neck pickup to high the sound is somewhat punchy , but my pick will end up hitting the cover ...the drawback w that is an unwanted percussive slap every time my pick hits the cover...
I wound up experimenting a lot w neck pick up heights and my conclusions are the higher the pick up the more punchy , yet not necessarily a pleasing tone . the tone can border on muddy if you use 13 + gauge ..when the pick up is set a little lower it gives more of a woody sound ..I have found that when the neck pick up is set to somewhat of a sweet spot such as the middle ground between woody and punchy it offers the most picking dynamics and string nuances ...you might have to turn up the amp a notch to compensate for the lost volume . The thing I like about the woody sound is it is pleasant , airy and it picks up the different tones of where you pick along the strings length a lot better ...
Like I said it all boils down to personal preference , also experimenting w string gauges comes in very handy for this too....
my .02's worth

all the best ,

Kenny
