You might try an elaboration on the Weber beam blocker:
http://www.webervst.com/blocker.html. This little gizmo is designed to sit
in front of the center of your speaker and redirect high frequencies. It
seems that if you make a
similar device but larger, you could block say 3/4 of the speaker surface
and kill some of the sound. Coat it with fuzzy fabric to get some more
absorbtion.
