I've always resisted transcribing because I've found it so tedious.

But, I've now combined two software products in a way which makes it a
good deal easier.

I just got Sibelius G7 and started using it with the Amazing Slow
Downer.

I paid full price for both. There are other programs which will do the
same things, perhaps better.

Anyway, I set up two windows on screen. In one, the passage plays as
slow as necessary.

In the other, I'm typing notes into G7. The thing that makes it easier
is that G7 plays the note as you work. So, you don't need to have an
instrument handy. You can hear the notes you're entering.

It's even possible to use the arrow key and play your transcription
along with the original file. You don't get the rhythms played
automatically this way, but you can tell if you've got the notes right.

That means you can transcribe anywhere, whether or not you have an
instrument. More importantly, whether or not you've got great ears.

And, when you're done, you've got a printable transcription.

Rick

Hey, just a tip that I recieved from Barry Greene. I used to use alot of slowing software, but Barry says that people who do that really rob themselves, mainly because in a band setting on the gig, you wouldn't be able to slow down the horn players lines to be able to respond. He says we should train ourselves to listen to faster things and be able to respond. I have personally stopped using it. He also said that when writing them out, it is better to have learned and internalized the whole solo before writing it out, then write it out from memory because the most useful part of transcribing is hearing and playing. Just some advice I got once. :oP
