How do you stop this kind of nonsense in the url below. AFAIK %20 is
not a part of url syntax . Why is it in this url generated by a
website? I know it's supposed to represent a space but it doesn't
work. Why does this practice persist? Even when you remove all this
crap the link still does not work. And why is it such a pita to find
the url that gets you to this groups website. There used to be a link
right on the first level of the yahoo page. Gone! so bubblegummers
can twitter I guess. When I click the learn more link in this msg I
still can't trim the url and get to anyplace like the group website
where I should be able to navigate to the dame file.

Ok, don't ask me how, but I got to the file archive with some more
url trimming but the other questions I would love to more about. For
instance I have never seen %28 and 29 before.

Here's a link
<http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/html/topics/urlencoding.htm>
(http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/html/topics/urlencoding.htm) to a
page that explains why those crazy URLs look like that (but it won't be
very easy to follow unless you're a "computer" person).

%28 and %29 represent opening and closing parenthesis. The funny thing
is that parentheses are valid characters in a URL, so it's not clear why
they were "escaped" like that.

I sometimes see links in this group's messages that are broken, as in
the hyperlink -the blue (typically), underlined part - doesn't encompass
the entire URL. I'm not quite sure how that happens - sometimes it's
pilot error, I guess sometimes it may happen because of formatting,
especially if there are spaces in the link.

When you put a link in a message, you can do what I did above (and
others on this list have done) which is to put the hyperlink on a single
descriptive word (such as "link" or "chart", etc.). That's not going to
help with generated messages like the new file notification, though.

Yep, *sometimes* a broken link happens because either the sender's email
client (or some intermediate step, or the receivers client) is set to
have only a certain number of characters per line, so the URL gets
broken at some convenient point.

Thank you RIck, I'll take a look. I am a bit of a computer person but
have only learned enough to do what I want to do on a mac, mostly
digital audio, email and browse a bit to get info. The pc environment
drives me crazy, it's so frustrating for audio and midi. At least in
the apps I use, Biab and Garritan jazz. These two are at war with
each other right beneath my desk locked in a little three sided
closet that still doesn't stifle the noise it makes. I have noticed
the same thing about links in emails. I usually catch the unlinked
portions and c and p them to the browser. I just remembered, months
ago, someone mentioning that the % and numbers were caused by
improper or incompatible formating or something like that. Took a
look at the link, just what I wanted. I don't mind being ignorant of
things as long as it's not an impediment to something I'm trying to
do. I also don't mind learning new stuff. Thank you again.
