Hi,

I think I have a rare epiphone emperor regent "solid top"... since my luthier confirmed it to me. It is stamped "used" on the back of the headstock but I cannot find the year it was built since the serial # was obliterated.
All I can see inside is a oval orange epiphone sticker"model emperor vc"
The original pickup is missing and so are the original keys and frequensator tailpiece which I replaced with a new one.

The question is: does anyone know of such a guitar since I cannot find any clues of any "solid top" emperor regent ever built on the internet.
It has colour finish flaws on the back and one front finish repair.
Otherwise it sounds pretty good acoustically and electric wise.

Thanks for any info

I don’t have anything I know for sure about the original Epiphone Emperors built by Epiphone rather than Gibson but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the original Epiphone had a solid carved top.  What seems strange is the used stamp on it. I have never seen a vintage or classic guitar stamped “used” before.  Gibson stamps some factory seconds or prototypes used every once in awhile but that I think that is a pretty modern technique.  I don’t even think the Kalamazoo plant did that but I could be wrong.  Since I live in Nashville where the current Gibson plant is I think I see more unusual Gibson stuff than you might see somewhere else.  I am sure most of those guitars are sold to employees.  I can’t see any of them being shipped anywhere ad put up for saw as used.

Years ago I saw an L5 stamped “Roadworn” on the back of the headstock by the factory which is even more unusual.  However just because of the stamp on it it sold for half of what it was worth as a guitar. Where is your stamped?  Is it stamped in the wood or just on it.

In the early 50's Epiphone made a few Emperor Regent Cutaways. I've
owned two. Gibson also made a few of these. they had some Gibson
"improvements" as well. I played one of these for 20 years.

Yes it is stamped used in the wood on the back of the headstock.

Astonishing - it's almost identical to my Epiphone Emperor II-VS Joe Pass model - my machine heads are Grovers, the serial # is on the back of the headstock (where yours reads "USED"), there's two humbuckers and a 3-pos switch and 4 pots and a diff. tailpiece. The neck has double binding. I like your headstock inlay better. Mine reads "Joe Pass" on the cover where yours says Gibson. I'd say yours is older. Mine was made by Unsung (great name!) in Korea in 2004.

I have a 2004 (I think, that's when I bought it) Korean Emperor and I've always wondered if it had a solid top (I have the yellow sunburst rather than the orange). The visible part of the top has nice tight parallel spruce grain lines (looks like spruce, from my flattop-owning days), and it's fairly loud and has a really nice tone played acoustically. The f-holes are bound, so you can't see the edge, meaning I can't be sure.
