Hey Jazzbuddies,

Recently, I read the following Stan Getz quote "It's like a language. You learn the alphabet, which are the scales. You learn sentences, which are the chords. And then you talk extemporaneously with the horn. It's a wonderful thing to speak extemporaneously, which is something I've never gotten the hang of. But musically I love to talk just off the top of my head. And that's what jazz music is all about."

And you can experience this same sensation by attending the variety of live jazz performances happening throughout CT. To aid in this process, prepared below is the Hartford Jazz Society (HJS) calendar effective through May!

Enjoy,
Greg

HENRY COLE TRIO
La Paloma Sabanara - 405 Capitol Avenue - Hartford
One of Puerto Rico's hottest trios comes to town! Twenty seven year old drummer Henry Cole emerged onto the music scene in old San Juan in 1999 where he studied classical percussion at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. However, it was not until a few years later--while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston-- that Cole's musical evolution pointed him naturally towards the jazz tradition. He went back home with a new energy and focus and performed as the "house drummer" for the 1st Annual "Jazzboriken" Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He played with such Latin jazz luminaries as Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Valentin, Anthony Carrillo, Dave Valentin, and Paoli Mejias. Miguel Zenón is rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about alto saxophonists in jazz. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the 29-year-old was educated primarily at the Escuela Libre de Musica. He then won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with Dick Oatts, Danílo Perez, Dave Liebman, George Garzone and Bill Pierce. After receiving his master's degree in saxophone performance in 2001, Zenón launched his career at the top, working with Perez, David Sanchez, the Mingus Big Band, Charlie Haden, Ray Barretto and Branford Marsalis. He is a member of the San Francisco Jazz Collective and leads his own quartet.

ROB ZAPPULLA SHOW
SzechuanTokyo - 1245 New Britain Avenue - West Hartford
There is no other current vocalist that does more to keep the spirit of the big band alive than Rob Zappulla! Not many vocalists have performed with the most popular big band of all time - The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Since 2001, there has been just one: Rob Zappulla. And the affiliation has taken this great singer on tour with the Orchestra around the globe and all the way to the 2005 President's Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC. In line with such great vocalists as Frank Sinatra, Zappulla will tell you that it has been his honor and privilege to perform with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of the legendary Buddy Morrow. Morrow, who performed with the Dorsey Brothers, Paul Whiteman, and Artie Shaw, to name a few, will tell you that Zappulla's talent, his rich baritone voice, his own style and interpretation of the Great American Songbook, and his prior experiences as a professional, dynamic entertainer have been a perfect match for the great Orchestra. Zappulla's hit CD, "Something Makes Me Want To Dance With You", was recorded in 2000. Conducted and arranged by Lew Anderson, the vocals are by Zappulla as are the trumpet and flugelhorn solos. The songs are by 20th century greats such as Rogers & Hart, Hammerstein, and Porter. Zappulla has performed at Birdland in New York City with The Lew Anderson Big Band. It was there that he premiered his new single, "Here's to Frank". This original song was written by Joe Ronan and arranged by Lew Anderson. It pays homage to the voice, the talent, and the legend; Frank Sinatra. Rob's performance of "Here's to Frank" received great acclaim from the enthusiastic crowd at Birdland. Rob's rich baritone voice, superb trumpet playing, extraordinary style and showmanship continue to bring him tremendous accolades at major theaters, casinos and various venues throughout the world.
