COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA featuring NNENNA FREELON
In his 80- year life span, William "Count" Basie expanded and elevated the art form of jazz to an "American Institution". The Count Basie Orchestra debuted in 1935 in Kansas City and within months the band was signed and brought to Manhattan. Post-war film appearances and recordings with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra exported the swinging 'Basie Sound' to Europe and the Far East. The current Count Basie Orchestra is led by long-time trombonist and Basie alum, Bill Hughes, with Butch Miles driving the rhythm section as drummer. All eighteen musicians are committed to upholding and advancing this "American Institution". Some members are new, yet the core of the sound still swings from musicians hand-picked by Count Basie himself.
Six-time Grammy Award nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, has won the Billie Holiday Award from the Academie du Jazz, the Eubie Blake Award, and has recently made her feature film debut in Mel Gibson's "What Women Want." The Count Basie Orchestra teams up with Freelon for their first-ever recording to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Count Basie's birth and 75 years of The Count Basie Orchestra. Freelon takes on great songs of the American Songbook that have their own unique history as told by Count Basie.
The Count Basie Orchestra featuring Nnenna Freelon is lead by trombonist and Basie alum, Bill Hughes. This is the first appearance on the festival by the Count Basie Orchestra and by Nnenna Freelon.

"LET'S GET LOST" - RECENTLY RESTORED DOCUMENTARY FILM ON CHET BAKER
Cinestudio (on the campus of Trinity College) - 300 Summit Street - Hartford
There is no disputing that, in 2007, a new generation of musicians and fans have made jazz hot. In fact, a new, restored print of Let's Get Lost was the hit of this year's festival circuit. Bruce Weber's dreamy, detached filmmaking fits trumpet legend Chet Baker's musical style, as well as the melancholy that derailed his life offstage. Baker's performances are never less than captivating, from his days with the West Coast sensation of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, to his later incarnation as an evocative vocalist of songs by Cole Porter and Elvis Costello. The restored print was a labor of love for photographer-turned-filmmaker Bruce Weber, who still reveres the artist who fell to his death from a hotel window six months after Let's Get Lost was released. "When the waves are spraying just so, the wind's nice, I still like to say, 'It's a Chet kind of day.'" - Bruce Weber.

González future presentations include: "Festival de Toros y Salsa" in France.

HOWARD FISHMAN
Club Helsinki - 284 Main St. - Great Barrington, MA
Howard Fishman has garnered a cult following for both his live performances (alternately explosive and intimate, sometimes in the space of a single song) and for his uncategorizable original music described as "modern primitive" by NEW YORK Magazine. Ever-evolving and increasingly difficult to pin down, Fishman leads the band with his acoustic guitar and observant, literate lyrics. The music, featuring violin, trumpet, bass and drums, moves through early jazz, folk, blues, avant-garde, classical, rock, pop, funk, ska and even country and gospel. Fishman has released five critically acclaimed CDs. The All Music Guide has called him "a singular artist...an important force in creative music." Recently he did and all horn band tribute to New Orleans, and a basement tapes tribute to Bob Dylan. HFQ has quickly become a favorite Helsinki band and we are thrilled to present them once again.
