VORCZA -
Web Site
The Main Pub - 306 Main Street - Manchester
Originating as an informal jazz trio, Vorcza has advanced to writing "adventurous yet accessible original material that marries jazz and funk with world-influenced rhythms." (Tom Huntington, Times Argus) Their skillfully written compositions and their strong presence have earned them much deserved recognition as a powerhouse trio whose combined efforts include working and touring with musical greats including Trey Anastasio, Dave Matthews, Jamie Masefield, Josh Roseman, Ernie Watts, Dave Schools and Lester Bowie. The Burlington, Vermont based group is made up of Ray Paczkowski on organ and vocals, Gabriel Jarrett on drums and Robinson Morse on upright and electric bass. Vorcza is a collaborative project interested primarily in improvisation. Contained in that word, however, is a great wealth of history, nuance, and potential. From the freely played cadenzas of the classical idiom through the realms of blues and jazz and onward into the age of the "creative"
D.J. and electronic musician, improvised music has woven itself into the collective conciousness. You may love to hear Charlie Parker improvise yet shudder to hear Albert Ayler hold forth; Jimi Hendrix's sound may appeal while Jerry Garcia leaves you cold. Certainly all these artists, in part, found their expression through improvisation, yet the boundaries each pushed and the material they chose to explore seem wildly disparate. And if you listen, you will hear in each a distinctive tension, that beautiful intangible created by instantaneous composition, unique, ephemeral, unforgettable. Improvisation encompasses a vast territory, unlimited in its potential for the creation of that beautiful sound; it is a geography that inspires and thrills this trio. Our own process is straightforward. Individually we bring compositions, rhythmic ideas, and harmonic ideas to the group. Influences in this respect have ranged from Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra and other proponents of "free" music, to Stravinsky and Bach, to Balinese chants, to Fela Kuti's sounds, and to traditional dance musics, tango, samba, etc. However, it is the process of arranging these pieces and ideas in a collaborative, "on the fly," manner that is most interesting to us. Essentially, what we try to do is take the core rhythmic/harmonic idea in a piece, discover it, and then shift it into another framework. All in the process of performing the piece. This is not improvisational arrangement by an individual conductor, but rather as a group discovery. It involves exploring the implications of aspects of a given piece to an "unknown" place. I use this metaphor: Music as yourself, running full bore to the edge of a cliff and then balancing one foot out over the abyss. In itself an exciting thing but not unimagined. But to take the next step and leave the ground itself, stand on air over nothing takes imagining the unimaginable. Of course, the moment you might find yourself standing over nothing, well...the instinct is to either look down, or scramble back to solid ground. Try to resist

OMAR SOSA
Club Helsinki - 284 Main St. - Great Barrington, MA -
413-528-3394
Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today: composer, arranger, producer, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader. He fuses a wide range of world music and electronic elements with his native Afro-Cuban roots to create a fresh and original urban sound – all with a Latin jazz heart. On stage, Mr. Sosa is a charismatic figure, inspiring his fellow musicians with his dynamic playing and improvisational approach to the music – an approach full of raw emotional power and humor. Mr. Sosa invariably inspires audiences to their feet and to join him in chorus vocals, heightening the sense of spontaneity and connection. Sosa's music is a unique style of Afro-Cuban jazz, and while it is rooted in the folkloric traditions of the African Diaspora, he always takes an exploratory approach – never one to let orthodoxy stand in the way of his pursuit of freedom. Sosa offers a joyful mix of jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, combining percussive forays inside the piano and a series of electronic effects with his inspired, passionate playing at the keyboard. His tempos are fluid, and his moods change freely. Sosa revels in the irresistible clave grooves of Latin jazz, while adding experimental touches to keep his listeners on their toes.
