I'm very unhappy to have to say this, but the LUG Wiki is offline.

I am, in fact VERY unhappy, since the whole reason I took over hosting the Wiki was to STOP its frequent failures. My server farm has been in almost continuous operation 24x7 since 1998 (barring the occasional hurricane) and I thought I could guarantee reliable service.

Unfortunately, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. About 2 weeks ago now, a certain well-known telecommunications company evidently decided that one of their services was obsolete and unplugged a cabinet or 2 and left all the public IP addresses that mousetech uses inaccessible from the public Internet. And if they warned anyone first, the warning never reached me. So the wiki is online, but only from my LAN, not from the world. Much good that does.

In the mean time, I've been shopping for a new carrier and a more modern transport system. I think I have one, but I don't know exactly when the new IP addresses will come online.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

I could toss the wiki into the cloud, but at the moment, there are more people who want to be paid than there are who want to pay me, so I'm trying to keep expenses down. If it's a real bother, I can make arangements, though.

  With regrets,

    Tim

Hey everyone, false alarm. The wiki is up and running, no down time. What we don't have right now is the Nagios alerting we had setup recently, but that's not as much of a concern (we haven't had an alert since it was setup).

I just got schedule information. Should have live IPs again come Friday, June 19th at the latest. Try not to break anything in the mean time, OK? :)

I should be able to make it tell me if there's a problem, since I'm directly on my LAN (duh!), so I'll just have to pass on any notifications manually while things are still disconnected.

I still question why the Wiki needed to be moved away from a local company who was providing hosting, and sponsoring the JaxLUG hosting to third party likely individuals vs businesses. In addition to hosting the Wiki, also hosted DNS (still do for jaxlug.org), the mailing list, and of course Nagios was monitoring it all... Though at first I did not have Nagios monitoring it, as I was not treating it the same as the rest of my systems. Still time and effort was spent to re-create what existed, and not sure for what purpose or gain.

In general I do not recommend taking things way from sponsoring businesses to be placed in the hands of individuals. After all LUG sponsors have interest in Linux, business interest, and may also hire LUG members... It is nice to get sponsorship from individuals but it does not have the same benefit or clout. Just my $0.02.
