Sometime back on our IRC channel; #jaxlug on
freenode.net, I mentioned to Rob
using Github for the JaxLUG.
At first it may seem odd, as Github, like Sourceforge and others is for hosting
code for projects, etc. Though it can be used for other purposes. There are
also some additional things you get with every Github repository. Things like
a Wiki, means to create a website that resides in a git repo, and some other
things.
I think the JaxLUG could benefit from an Github Organization account. Members
who have Github accounts can be associated. It is a bit better than say
mentioning membership on LinkedIn or maybe even Meetup. Since anyone can join
a meetup, or say your a JaxLUG member on LinkedIn. You have to be invited to
be part of a Github Organization. Which on your account will show your
affiliation.
We can use Github to host the JaxLUG website. Though it will likely just be
part of the wiki. May need something outside to do URL re-writing,
jaxlug.net ->
jaxlug.github.io. Otherwise would be
jaxlug.github.io. Their
default mapping for websites for repos.
Presentations can be uploaded into either the wiki or a repo. Other repos can
be created if they are say examples, etc of what is in a presentation. I think
the repo aspect could be of use for meetings and stuff.
There are likely other benefits and more ways it can be used. Just wanted to
toss out the idea. Not sure if other groups are doing this. It would make it
so no one has to administrate the wiki, keep up to date, admin server, etc.
Along the lines of moving the mailing list to Google Groups.
If interested I can create the JaxLUG organization account. Or anyone with a
Github account can do the same. I think it would be of benefit. It is up to the
group to discuss and decide.
