Anyone had any problems hooking up the board?

When I connect mine to my Mac 10.8 system, it does nothing but blink the LED in some sort of pattern (which I feel may not be a repeating pattern).

The item never show's up in the Mac's list of USB devices connected and VMWare does not list it as a hardware USB device to connect to the VM (currently BackTrack).

I just connected it to one of my Win XP boxes and it does not come up at all (to attempt to install the driver or anything). It is almost like the board is not initializing the USB bus..

Thoughts?

Try it on a Linux box or VM, it should come up as a regular serial terminal, /dev/ttyUSB0. You need drivers for the serial device in Windows and Mac.

Yea, but I should be able to use VMware to pass the device through to the linux VM. The Mac is not recognizing that any device is plugged into its USB port to pass through.

I will try it on another system later this evening. Just wondering if anyone has been able to get it working yet.

Oh, I gotcha. I got it working with no problems, but I was using Linux. Let me know how it goes, I'm pretty sure Jordan got it passed through to a Linux VM from a Mac when he was showing us how to use it.

FYI, the green LED indicates the board is sending serial data (TX), the red LED indicates receiving data (RX). http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/224

Not quite. I'm fairly certain red is both send and receive (it might
just be one or the other), but I know for a fact green is something
else entirely. Easy enough to verify by connecting and not doing
anything and observing it continues to blink. Now, as to what it is,
I'll leave that as an exercise for the user...

If you want to connect it to a windows / mac machine, you can install
the drivers: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

But I recommend just using linux. At least on OSX, I've seen the
drivers kernel panic the box when unplugging or inserting the device,
so I'm not a big fan. Maybe the windows ones are more stable.

I am just trying to get Mac or Windows to acknowledge the existence of the device, just to get VMWare Fusion to allow me to pass the USB device directly to the VM.

This should (I think) not require drivers on the host.

I will do some more stuff later to figure it out. Just wanted to isolate the possibility of a bad device.

It shouldn't (require drivers on the host). I have passed USB dongles
(for licensing) to software running in VMs without the drivers loaded on
the host machine.

I would double check the VM settings, and also make sure it is showing
as connected to the VM

(vague, I know--sorry. VMWare Workstation on Windows 7 user)

That's correct. You should not need drivers on the host to get VMWare
to pass it to the guest. I didn't have Mac drivers when I used Fusion
to pass it to a Linux VM where I played with it. Could be a bad
device, but for the most part, if you see the green blinking light, it
means it was successfully programmed which implies that /most/ of the
functionality had to be there and be correct for it to even get that
far. One issue I have noticed is that switching USB ports can help
(don't know if it's different power levels or what), and some
connections are a bit flakey and just unplugging/replugging can help.

I tried the board on my Windows 7 PC today, it installed the drivers automatically, and I was able to use it in PuTTY. I have used an Arduino before, so maybe I had the Arduino UART drivers, but that should make it pretty simple for anyone wanting to use this in Windows.

Tried it on another Windows 7 PC today, one that has never seen an Arduino or other UART before... Downloaded the drivers automatically, works flawlessly, again using PuTTY as a serial terminal.

Has anyone started on this and found any flags? :)

Good to know.

You're the only one who's submitted keys so far. Hoping some of the other folks get a chance to poke at it. The first key is kinda hard to miss, so clearly folks haven't been playing with it much, or have been stuck on the initial connection. :-)

So, I connected my unit to my Win7 box, to another Mac and still nothing. I am going to have to nab your known good one Jess and see if it comes up like expected, thereby ruling out a bad computer.

Also, took a video of my connect procedure. I am getting one faint red LED blink on connect.

Also also, might have my first key/flag. Will have to wait until I can get registered to see if its real.

Well, I have figured out how to get my unit working. It looks like it was a loose connection somewhere, if I keep the board in the USB port at a specific angle, it works all happy.

That being said, I have it passed through to my VM (my Win7 ultimate install did not install the drivers, but it happiply passed through to the VM) and I have SSHed into it.

And, as typical when I encounter a text-based adventure, I promptly killed myself.

Time to make my wife log out of her MUD (her original character is 10+ years old) and give this a go.
