All I want is ONE BOOK to read that will get me started on small projects that teach me how to understand and how to
Develop with Javascript, One for front-end and One for back-end.

Any tips?

google javascript book

The first entry is "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, Fourth Edition."
There's also a discussion at Stack Overflow about good JavaScript books.
