Harshad, could we run this through the group's meetup page? That way we have a consistent location for such events; also Meetup has a lot of event specific features such as tracking capacity and maintaining wait lists.

I'd be more than happy to set this up on Meetup for you; in fact, I could even set you up as organizer on the groups so that you could set up future events such as this yourself.

Meetup is a great service. The primary reason I am a hesitant to use Meetup is that at a cost of 12-19 USD per month, I find it extremely expensive to sustain over the long run.  

It's great that ThoughtWorks is currently supporting the meetup group. However I find it risky for us to invest time & energy in building a user base exclusively at meetup.com and then having to raise money to sustain or having to drop out due to the steep fees. 

Free Google Group, Facebook & Twitter seem like a relatively safe long term bet. Also Facebook gets us viral energy. 

Building the email list I think is the best bet as email isn't going away anytime soon. Cant say so even about Facebook or Twitter.

So IMHO we should leverage meetup along with the other channels. 

You already have the rights to Twitter & the Google group, you might want to consider joining FB just for such activities :)

Would be happy to add you as an admin on the FB page.

FYI group: Currently the admin rights to all channels are shared by me, Saager, Pratik Rokade, Sachin Dombe & Yogesh Wadile, all of whom put in  time & effort into the Java 7 launch event last year. Saager & Pratik in particular have hosted several Java meets at the ThoughtWorks office.

If you think you too can chip in some time for Pune JUG activities (especially the monthly meets), please do get in touch with any of us.

Already done, you should have a separate mail notifying you of the same. Let me know if everything looks good there and we'll announce the meetup.

Right now there's a few of us who are fine sinking the costs of monthly subscriptions.

Well, ThoughtWorks only provides the venue (and drinks/snacks) for meetups, but we're very grateful for that! The money so far has come from Pratik and Mushtaq.

However I find it risky for us to invest time & energy in building a user base exclusively at meetup.com and then having to raise money to sustain or having to drop out due to the steep fees.

We'll make sure that never becomes and issue, at least for the foreseeable future.

The problem with those is that it is hard to run events off them effectively.
Managing venues, capacity, waiting lists, attendance as well as providing a log of prior events with feedback is infinitely better on Meetup.

The mailing list is undoubtedly the best place to hold offline conversations, but I'm sure I don't need to convince you that managing the logistics for an offline event is a whole other ball game. Facebook & Twitter, like you said, are good for viral communication; they help amplify announcements very well.

Agreed...
Google Groups for online conversations,
Meetup for brick and mortar conversations,
Facebook and Twitter to amplify the above two.

That would work if I had a FB profile and that's something that I _don't_ want to have. :)

In fact, I'd urge all of you to join the Meetup[1] as well, membership is free[2]! Then, if you have any interesting ideas that you'd like to discuss/talk about you can suggest a meetup and then the organizing group can get together to work out the logistics for the same.
