Hi all,

Loooooooong time since I posted here. How are you all doing?

I'm working on a new Swing GUI application at work, and wanted a fresh
look to distinguish it in the users' minds from the older application
it will replace. The older application uses the JGoodies "Plastic 3D"
look and feel, which is very nice, but starting to feel a bit dated.

I searched around for Swing LaFs, and was rather disappointed to find
so few available, even fewer that are free, and even the very
expensive ones look old. While searching I finally found out what
Synth is all about, and started looking for Synth skins/themes - only
to find a similar story. Very little is available out there. All very
disappointing... Last time I checked in, Romaine Guy was giving Swing
a major makeover and things were looking up, graphically.

Perhaps I have missed something. Does anyone know of a good resource
for Synth skins and/or Swing LaFs? Perhaps a Synth "designer"-type
editor app for quickly creating & testing out skins?

Cheers,
Will.

I suppose there are only so many ways to present the same half a dozen differently behaving widgets in a generic, usable and professional manner.  Did you see this page: http://www.taranfx.com/best-java-swing-look-and-feel-themes-professional-casual-top-10 ?

I would say give http://www.jidesoft.com/ a try - multiple look and feels and a slew of widgtes that make your swing application look like a modern app. My two cents: Oracle should buy that company and have them add all the widgets to swing in the first place...

Thanks for that Link. I settled with Substance (but another color
scheme as the one in the screenshot shown at the link. Trying a lot of
look and feels I noticed that for many there are only the main widgets
showing nice and less frequently used often do not look so nice.

And BTW: There are some widgets that do not really consider different
look and feels - so you should also pay attention to what widgets you
use.
