Maybe you should look at remote work or relocating. I know that I've worked for a company whose main product is hardware, but managed to work from home at times without problems, so I expect most other Java developers could more easily.
Paypal contacted someone I know for a remote worker position so they can stay here in Ohio but travel to California periodically. He does .NET but is a great UI developer as well. I don't see many opportunities for people around here for doing exciting work as we have lots of insurance, grocery, banking, financial services and health care. That is the bulk of the jobs and they all tend to be about as exciting as watching paint dry.
