Pro:
- You can download a JDK and JRE from the Oracle website
- The latest version number is 1.0.7u02

Contra:
- According to http://java.com/en/download/faq/java7.xml it is only available for developers.

My company creates standard software (B2B) that we ship to thousands of customers. Experiences from the past indicate that our customers usually install java from http://java.com and we expect questions and concerns about running on experimental java versions.

Did any of you encounter problems with customers and how did you handle that? Is this page just forgotten by the Oracle release team? Is there a scheduled release date somewhere? Who should I ask?

It's 'released', but doesn't seem to be getting rolled out in the
automatic updates. My company deploys a webstarted client to a number
of customers, we've started contacting people letting them know the
change is coming and that we'll require Java 7 in 3 months time. But,
the way things look right now the default install of Java at that
point may well be Java 6 still. We'll have to see I think.

Java 6 is EOL in July this year so there is a deadline for 7 to start
getting push or an announcement putting off that date.

I'm predicting that Oracle will push this back.

what exactly does end of life mean for java anyway?

I still see java 5 a lot…. I assume it's been "EOL"ed.

EOL means that it won't be patched any longer, unless you have a paid
support contract with Oracle. I don't have doubts that there are lots of
older JREs around; they are a security problem. Probably not so important,
as most of security issues aren't related to Java being used on the
server, and probably many of those installations are used in a secured
intranet. In any case, frankly speaking, not being able to upgrade a JRE
for such a long time is the sign of a problem.

I was on a Spring training course, and the guy was going on about how
you can use the annotations and this lady in the front asked him how
to do the same task in the XML config because their machines were
still running Java 1.3

Old Java unfortunately never dies.

Although we don't need to support 1.3 anymore, we are stuck on 1.4
primarily due to the fact that we need to support various and sundry
application servers, and not always the newest versions of them.

We need a t-shirt with this printed: "Old Java never dies, it just
rusts quietly in the paddock!"

Just saw that. Good news if it means they fix the bugs, bit crappy
though as we'd started warming customers up ready to make sure they
moved to 7 in time for the EOL.
