I'm a long time listener to the podcast and, prior to the last few
months, could have claimed to listen to every episode.

Just casting a single vote here, but Scala isn't on my radar screen
right now. I'd love to see ScalaWags moved to its own podcast. At
least placing the Scala content the end of the podcast gives me an
opportunity to drop off (even though I probably won't!).

...not sure if you know this but WAGs in the UK stands for 'Wives And
Girlfriends' of (usually) overpaid, self-important prima donnas known
as professional football (soccer) players! Difficult to break the
association when you guys talk about Scala Wags!!!

Talking of splitting podcasts, wouldn't it make more sense for Joe to
have his own podcast on all things UI?

I mean it (and he) has very little to do with Java and Joe has already
stated he has no interest in 'Enterprise' Java which is very relevent
for a Java podcast.......

By all means split out the Scala Wags (I have no interest in learning
Scala at present) but I think Joe should go first!! No offence Joe!

Why should Java's domain be limited to 'enterprise'?  That's the undertone I'm getting from that message, even though it might not have been intended in this particular case.  Shouldn't the community be interested in 'non-enterprise' uses of Java, and in having non-traditional uses of Java explored more, not less?  Perhaps these splits people are advocating should happen, but the podcast should be renamed to 'enterprise java posse'.

I think that the Java Posse strike a very nice balance between the different interests.   The Java language and JVM covers a very wide spectrum of topics and interests today.   The Posse helps all of us stay informed in these areas.   While I'm personally not always interested in these other topics, I am glad that the Posse discusses them;  it helps me keep a finger on what is going on.

Besides, there is this fantastic technology called "fast forward" if the Posse gets a bit too dry.  :-)

i meant to say the 'enterpise' topics come up now and then (quite
often I'd say) in addition to the JDK-type issues we normally hear and
that Joe seemed disinterested.

My point was that they were more relevent to Java than UI/design which
Joe leads and would make more sense to spin out than say, the
ScalaWags.

I'm all for a diverse range of topics but there should be some
Java-relatedness in there somewhere.

Relevant or important? I think the Enterprise stuff is completely
overcooked nowadays. I think it is for the betterment of human kind
that Joe does his thing, and bangs on about design (and people realise
it isn't fonts and colours).

How many organisations stupidly arrange their teams so the senior guys
work on "the back end" and the junior guy so "the front end" ? Its
still far too common...

So true. I used to always do the data model first, thinking that was
the "hard part" and the UI could just be tacked on. Now I try to get
a UI or interaction design guy involved as soon as possible - I know
I'll always be able to get data in and out of the database, but
getting the UI right is something that takes skills...

Yours,

Tom

Yes ! Its one of the hardest things - and its never finished - almost
never. There is no "green bar" of a unit test to tell you it is
"done". Bugs are not clear etc.. yes its achingly hard, but for the
majority of apps it is the most important thing.

I think part of the reason for apples popularity is that they dare to
make the tech trail behind the user experience.

There's been talk of a scala podcast, but I had seen no fruits.  Glad to see you guys picking up our slack!  If there are too many complaints, perhaps we (the scala community) can round up some scurvy dogs and hoist the jolly roger on 'ar own podcast.  I would *LOVE* to hear the theme song ideas for "Scalawags"
