In this frustrating era of digital proximity despite physical distance, it is both easier and harder to get to know people. I did not know Spilios Spiliotis when I summered in or visited Hydra, but his presence in any forum regarding our beloved island was ubiquitous.

I am grateful to have been wrong when I wrote so many times before that Hydra was basically absent from history. Perhaps our beloved island did not participate with the roar she did in the Revolution, but the heart of the island still beat, throughout the long, fascinating, glorious, and complicated assemblage of history that is Greece. It is people like Spilios and any number of others, whose granular sense of detail and patient love for their home, these are the people who bring history to life.

The island, north of Atlantic City along the New Jersey coast, was named for Rueben Tucker, a Quaker from New York who bought it in 1765. According to John Bailey Lloyd, a historian who has written about the lost island in two books, wealthy Quakers gathered there for religious retreats in the years following the American Revolution.

The island was renamed Sea Haven in the 1870s, when there were plans to develop it into a major resort. Those plans were shelved when the nearby town of Beach Haven, on another island a few miles to the north, proved to be too much competition.

In 1927, the Little Egg Harbor Light House, which had stood for nearly a century, tumbled into the sea. The ever-encroaching ocean forced the Coast Guard to evacuate the island in 1930, according to Lloyd.

Clockwork Island Adventure is the second One Piece movie, and given that it takes place once Sanji is introduced, it should be watched after episode 53 of the anime. The plot involves Luffy and his crew being robbed by new enemies called the Trump Pirates, with Nami also lost in the encounter. Forced to team up with the Thief Brothers, the Straw Hats proceed to an island that supposedly has the world's most expensive watch.

One Piece: Chopper's Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals is a bit a mouthful, especially for another movie that has a runtime of less than a complete hour. As its name might suggest, the plot involves Luffy's ally Tony Tony Chopper. Thus, it should be watched only after episode 102 of the anime. Upon visiting the eponymous island, the young reindeer is promptly made into the new king of the animals living there. This makes him an object of desire for an enemy seeking to consume his antlers, however, leading to Luffy and others having to fight him off.

The sixth One Piece movie is The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle, which should be watched after episode 228 of the anime series. The story involves Luffy's crew finding an old woman in a treasure chest, and they're promptly led to an island to meet its leader, Ratchet. Unfortunately for them, Ratchet is fully aware of the island's potential, and he aims to take control of it thus take over the world. This movie returned to the more traditional style and tone after the changes made in Baron Omatsuri.

"That Pittsburgh audiences really listen and that every word and gesture counts," Flaherty said. "We've learned a lot about proportion as well. We've also found that the piece is really getting audiences laughing although it is also incredibly moving, sometimes simultaneously."

Ahrens and Flaherty's songs have transported audiences to a 1950s TV studio, an island in the Antilles, the Civil War South, ragtime-era Manhattan and the streets of Dublin. With their new show, they take us right to the heart of theatre history.
