I own Seascape now and I'm refitting her as time and money permit. Over last summer I spent 2.5 mos. living aboard in Bellingham and among other tasks loaded 200 ft. of new HT chain. Its lying in the forepeak now but i want to run a chaim pipe aft to the port side locker aft of the forepeak and stow the chain there, lower and farther aft.

Anybody done that yet? Comments appreciated.

Re moving the chain aft, when I bought my Jason, I found that the original owner (who bought a rigged hull and deck and finished out the interior and the topside details himself) had installed the windlass aft of the design location and created a chain pipe that went down through the starboard forward V berth, using one of the large lockers as a chain locker. While it served the purpose of getting a lot of weight back from the bow, it made that berth quite uncomfortable and unusable except by children or small adults. I eventually moved both forward to the design location.

My point is that if you do relocate the chain pipe and locker, be sure to take into your design the effect on the berth.
Dave, who has sold his Jason 35, Toison D'Or, and is sailing an 8' dinghy in its place.

Thanks Dave.

Certainly that's an issue, but with 2 pilot berths and the remaining v berth we'll be happy.

On the there hand, pounding North on the Baja Bash will be that much less intolerable!

Certainly good to get that weight low so that it can act as ballast and near the center of gravity, so as to minimize hobby-horsing.

On Norwegian Steam (Jason 35 hull # 10), I stow the chain in the keel, aft of the lead. A bidirectional windless is there two. Together, 300 feet of 3/8" BBB chain plus the Lewmar windless provide an extra 500 pounds of ballast.

You should consider the following two problems that are, in a way, opposites:

1. If you have very much friction in your pipe, the weight of the anchor will not be sufficient to pull chain out of the locker and through the pipe.

2. In deep water (say 50' or more), the weight of the chain that is out will be sufficient to pull the rest of the chain out precipitously, and you will have a chain "run-away". (Be sure you have the bitter end secured very firmly.)

On Norwegian Steam, I do not use a pipe. Instead, I have a series of u-shaped channels suspended from the cabin sole beams, with rollers at the inflection points. This reduces friction a lot. The bidirectional windless inhibits chain from running away when anchoring deep.

If you are interested in my set-up, come down to Shilsholes Bay Marina and I will demonstrate it to you.

Happy New Year.

Jason 35, S/V Dromen--- hull number 24
Our 200 feet of 5/16" chain and 200' of rope is carried in front of the V-berth. We also carry a Danforth with 200 feet of rope in the lazerette.  The boat rides like a duck in stormy seas although we are coastal cruisers so we avoid storms these days.  Our off-shore experience is limited to several trips up and down the coast from Portland to BC.  Dromen  did well in a full gale with 15 foot swell and breaking waves. ( Dromen is now moored in Poulsbo.)  The windlass is a deck mounted maxwell.  Our holding tank is in the keel.  Two 60 gallon water tanks under settees.  Perkins 4-108 engine,  50 gallon diesel tank behind engine. We anchor out most of the time when cruising.  Only issue is to let the kinks out of the chain once in a while to avoid jams in the windlass.

Fair winds to Ted Brewer and the Jason 35 Group,
Jerry and Joy Hanson

Thanks Alan. I'll be returning to Bellingham in mid April. If I can make it to Shilshole let you know. I'd like to see what you've done.

Thanks, Jerry and Joy. I'm glad to hear Dromen is up to the offshore seas. If all goes well with Seascape's refit I'll sail her down to Newport, OR this summer.
