Hi there, I just bought Aislyn, a Jason 35' here in Victoria, BC.

I am in the process of outfitting her for offshore. I recently came across a Monitor Windvane, never used or installed, for sale on Craigslist from 1990. I would need to adjust it to fit on to the Jason transom (it's fitted for a Coast 34', similar, but not quite the same).

Before I purchase it and spend a bunch of money to upgrade it and fit it, I thought I would check to see if anyone has one for sale that is already fitted for a Jason 35' who no longer needs it?

Or, any advice:)

Thanks kindly,
Kayleen

Congratulations on getting your Jason.

Sorry I cannot advise on the wind vane as I've never sailed with one.  All my offshore sailing was on ocean races, and we'd have a man at the wheel at all times.  In rough weather that could be a bit hairy as some of the crew would often wind up seasick.

Indeed I vividly recall the 1970 Trans-Pac race where, for about 4 stormy days, there were only three of us on my watch, and two on the other, due to seasickness.  Still, we were aboard a heavy 56 foot ketch and kept her moving fast enough to take 2nd in Class B.  Needless to say, the skipper was a very happy man.

Good luck with the wind vane.

Hi Ted,

Thanks kindly for the reply! That sounds like quite the harrowing race!

I look forward to taking her out to open sea:)

Best,
Kayleen

Congrats.  It is not that big of deal to get some new tubes cut to mount. A repair kit, bearings etc use to be a easy order.  Mine is mounted a few inches higher than suggested.  (As she filled for cruising draft increased)
Not familiar with Coast 34 , the mount tubes may have more than enough length. The lowers may be short.
My Jason is for sale fully equipped and stocked with spares.  Curious how was the Monitor priced.

Swallowed the anchor, La Paz, BCS, Mex

Good to hear from you. Actually, I enjoyed every minute of that race, and
all the others, as I am one of the very lucky souls who seem to be immune to
seasickness.
Cheers
Ted

Hi mike, thanks for the advice. Yes I will be able to cut the lowers shorter but will need to order new upper tubes, which is easy enough. Because it’s from 1990 it doesn’t have the strut guard, which I’m not sure if that’s really that big of deal.

It’s priced at $4000 cad, which seems high despite being brand new, as it is older than I am!

Best of luck on the sale mike.

If new uninstalled and complete uppers should not be a big deal . Drawing a blank on strut guards.
Maybe these photos will give you some insight.

Hello Kayleen,

I have a monitor that I bought new from Scanmar, the manufacturer. That monitor, which I named Rangval after my grandfather, has steered Norwegian Steam very capably for at least 10,000 miles. Wonderful piece of equipment.

If you have not already contacted Scanmar, you definitely should. I am sure they can sell you the Jason-specific support tubing that you need.

Good luck.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for info! It seems fitting to name steering systems, doesn't it? After all they are practically crew!

I did end up contacting Scanmar and ended chatting to the owner of the company who was beyond helpful. I have made a deposit on a new Monitor and can't wait to get it on my stern!
