Today it became official, and my wife Jenny and I are the next caretakers of Pinniped, a home-built Jason 35. We purchased her from her builders, a wonderful husband-and-wife team who poured heart and a lot of soul into her construction. She will retain her name and her home port of Erie, PA.
Pinniped was built from plans in the previous owners’ back yard over the course of about 10 years, and was launched in 1991. She has a cutter rig, with sails and self-tending staysail spar by the Bierig loft in Erie. The interior is finished in Pennsylvania cherry. Among many thoughtful interior details are a Pullman-style folding sink in the head to save space, a great nav desk, a well laid-out galley with gimballed three-burner stove with oven and broiler, a folding dining table between roomy settees, a pilot berth to port, a ton of storage compartments with fitted doors, and the amazing Cherubini portlights throughout the cabin. Her Volvo Penta 18HP diesel drives a two-blade variable pitch prop that can be fully feathered. She is tiller steered, and the rudder includes a micro-trim tab with tiller-mounted control.
She is really pretty amazing, and we are excited to start learning more with her in the spring.
