When I bought Seascape last August her decks were stripped of all hardware. I've replaced everything but the vang and mainsheet rig.

I haven't been able to figure out how the end of boom mainsheet was rigged. I do know that the was no traveler.

I'm not sure I want to rig it that way. I think I'd prefer a traveler, especially because I do a lot of single handed passages.

First off I'd like to hear pros and cons on end of boom vs. mid boom rigs, traveler vs. no traveler, and where to place the traveler track.

I think it would be best aft oh the cockpit, but that seems impossible, since the tiller extends into the cockpit.

Also, do I need a vang if I go with the mainsheet end of boom / no traveler option?

Is anyone able to send me a link to a diagram showing how to rig the mainsheet end of boom / no traveler option?

Hi Matt, my boat is rigged as you describe I will see if I fave a picture to send to you. There are 4, 3 sheave blocks with locking cams on the bottom two blocks which are secured at the stern corners of the cockpit coaming. The other two blocks are attached at the near the end of the boom. I don't have a vang but I do have a preventer. Boom angle is adjusted by adjusting tension on the two main sheets that run thru the blocks

Thanks Scott. The pictures just what I need. Did your boat always have a wheel or was it added as an upgrade? Are you able to handle the main single handed?

I don’t know when it was added; its old steering gear so likely original it still has the tiller for back up and both work with the mainsheet as rigged. I can single hand all sheets. I put on roller furling 2 years ago to simplify things

Hi David,

I'll tell you what I did on Norwegian Steam. I like a traveler. Going to windward, when the wind comes up, the quickest way to get her back on her feet and to reduce weather helm is to lower the traveler car to leeward. I considered putting the traveler on the bridge deck just aft of the companionway, but decided against that because it would be in the way and because it would interfere with a companionway dodger. Instead, I had a curved beam laminated to the shape of the deck ahead of the dodger and placed the traveler on top of it, through-bolting the traveler, through the beam, and through a backup plate under the deck.
