Ahoy y’all!
I recently purchased the s/v Pisces in Seattle from a most delightful
couple, Jacob and Julia Wenegrat. It was truly a pleasure working
through the transaction with them. At Jacob’s suggestion, I’ve
applied for membership in this group to learn as much as I can about
these wonderful sailboats. I’m sure I’ll have many questions as I
begin the familiarization process. I think the best advice I’ve
gotten came from the surveyor, who suggested: “Just sail the boat as
often as you can before making any changes or embarking on any
projects.” Rings true to me. On the other hand, since I’ll probably
be singlehanding most of the time, I would appreciate hearing from
those who have experience in this arena. BTW, I’ve changed the name
to the “Rollin’ Coaster”. Looking forward to further conversations.
Most Sincerely,
Roland

Roland,
Welcome aboard.  I often sail TWYZARK single handed.  The autopilot is very important for setting/changing sail as well as other duties that require me to leave the helm.  Most of my current sailing is in Chesapeake Bay.  Where will you be sailing?

Hello Twy,

Thanks for the Welcome.  Fortunately, Rollin' Coaster has an autopilot.  For starters I'll be sailing the San Juan Islands North of Seattle, Washington  for a couple of months before bringing her down the coast to San Francisco Bay which is closer to home.  Ultimately, I expect to do some long distance voyaging.

Good to hear you are now the skipper of Pisces, one of my Jason 35s. There
is a good group of owners out there and the boats have made some great
voyages. I wish you all the best wherever you may sail. Look after the old
girl and she will look after you.

What a pleasant surprise Ted, if I may be so informal.  I hope I can call upon your intimate knowledge of the Jasons if questions regarding design considerations come up.  The steep part of the learning curve right now is controlling her when backing down which I understand to be an issue with most boats of this genre.  Thanks for your note.

Sincerely,

Roland

I can only say that full keel boats with propellers in an aperture are always difficult to handle in reverse. The only technique that seems to help is to get up speed in reverse, then put the gear in neutral. Without the propeller thrust the rudder often has some hope of steering in reverse.

Go out in open water and practice the technique to see how it works for your boat.  Prayer can do wonders as well!

Ted,  Appreciate the tip.At least it's comforting to know it's not just me that has the problem.
