I also tried the OpenVox PCIe cards, but couldn't find out how to make it work with Asterisk or FreePBX. That was when I was trying to also have it do voice, which we have replaced with a SIP provider and so are focused on SMS now.
I tried some Raspberry Pi solutions before OpenVox and had a hard time getting it to work. They had to go through an Arduino conversion and seemed to have trouble being stable for whatever reason. I have since purchased the following, which I am waiting to show up in the mail.
I prefer a Verizon solution since AT&T has a poor signal where I am at, but I can work to boost the signal if needed. I was going through the documentation here: http://docs.jasminsms.com/en/latest/installation/index.html#sending-your-first-sms and see it talking about setting up the SMPP connection, but I don't see anywhere where we talk about compatible hardware.

to Jasmin SMS Gateway
Hey Alan,
Jasmin has only smpp upstream connector, this means you can only connect to a smpp provider, all of these hardware does not support smpp i guess, they usually do http or direct at command over serial interface.
A new project is ongoing to make Jasmin connect to multi-protocol providers, including gsm modems, it's not yet published/licensed under Jasmin scope, if you are interested in an early access then drop a line to sup...@jasminsms.com
