Hi all,
Could somebody please tell me what IVU stands for. What the procedure
entails? I am programmed to clear my bowel, but I thought this
investigation has to do with the renal system and not the bowel.

It is a common abbreviation for IntraVenous Urogram or sometimes IVP
(Intravenous Pyelogram), a radiological study of the renal system which
involves injecting a contrast media and then shooting some Xrays.
To get a clearer Xray picture, you may be given a laxative to clear the
bowels.....

In addition to what Alan Teh had said, IVU requires injection of intravenous
contrast, which will be excreted be functional kidneys, into urinary system,
the process of which will be shown on serial X-rays. It gives a rough idea
of the function of the kidneys, any blockage in the urinary system, as well
as presence of any lesions in the urinary system, i.e. stone (which can't
be seen on usual X-ray), tumour etc.
It is contraindicated in individuals known to be allergic to IV contrast and
those who have impaired kidney functions.
The alternative to IVU in these cases is CTU (computed tomographic urogram).
