Gifam Offers Degree Course In Holistic Nutrition & Natural Healing

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- The US-based Global Institute For
Alternative Medicine (GIFAM) wants to help marketers and distributors of
natural health products and dietary supplements to equip themselves with
better knowledge and skills through a degree course in Bachelor of
Science in Holistic Nutrition.
The degree course is also for those who want to know about natural healing.
GIFAM has teamed up with NewLife International Malaysia, a natural
health care products provider, to provide the degree course through
distance learning via the Internet.
The founder of GIFAM, Dr Lynn Hardy, decided to offer the course as she
is a firm believer that natural healing is essential for everyday life.
She said there has been increased interest in natural healing and proper
nutrition of late.
In an interview, she said one of the major causes of death in children
under five years was cancer and the majority of them obtained the
disease from their mothers during pregnancy.
"The food and sometimes even the medicine that the mother consumes are
the substances that contribute to the cause of the disease," she said.
As such, Dr Hardy said it was necessary for as many people as possible
to have knowledge on natural healing as an alternative way to deal with
diseases.
She said there has been strong response for the course, which would
cover areas like basic anatomy, toxicity and detoxification, dietary
guidelines, pediatric nutrition, medical terminology, alternative
healing methods, common ailments/prevention and treatment, physical
fitness and business procedures.
NewLife International president Tan Cheng Kiat said the company's
objective in teaming up with GIFAM is to spread the knowledge of natural
healing to more Malaysians.
"Medical expenses are getting more expensive and so is the rise in
number of diseases in the country is fast," he said."As such, knowledge
on nutrition is important to bring a healthy lifestyle among the people."
Tan said the course would also help increase the awareness on proper
nutrition among Malaysians.
So far more than 60 Malaysians have signed up for the course so far and
NewLife expects more to come in.
Who can sign in for the course?
Dr Hardy said the course was specially designed for natural health
practitioners looking to expand their business or for those involved in
the retail or distribution of natural health products and dietary
supplements.
"It is also for those wishing to learn about natural healing techniques
to enhance their lives," she said.
Graduates from the programme, she said, were qualified to practice as
nutritional consultants and to design personal meal plans and nutrition
programmes for clients based on the latest scientific principles and
practical skills.
Dr Hardy said feedback received by GIFAM had been encouraging and those
who had signed up for the course had come from diverse backgrounds such
as medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, psychiatrists,
microbiologists, fitness trainers, chefs, travel consultants,
weight-loss consultants and housewives.
More than 600 students had graduated from the course.
Besides Malaysia, the degree course has also been introduced in other
Asian countries like Japan, Brunei, Singapore and Kuwait.
