Isn't this in blatant competition with JapanSoc?

Yes and no. Yes because to some degree it does what japansoc does. No because many people, including me, don't bother with japansoc anymore since its move to Facebook. And with the recent change of japundits format it is nice to know about other options.

That being said I would hope there was permission by Nick to post this to the list, since japansoc is his baby, even though it is being brought up to help the Japan blogging community.

Nobody needs my permission. Anyone can post on JapanSoc, and Chris and
Philip have already posted about JapanBump and JapanLike respectively.
Most posts have to be dug out of Facebook's spam queue, but they do
get posted.

I don't really understand people's aversion to JapanSoc being on
Facebook. If you go to http://japansoc.com, you'll see it's still just
a web page with links submitted by users. The number of "likes"
indicates how many people found a post worth reading. But okay, some
people "don't bother" with Facebook, and I can understand that, but
JapanSoc is still active whether you look at it or not. I'm working
hard everyday to keep it updated with fresh content, and I don't
really appreciate recent implications that JapanSoc is dead and we
should all use a different site instead.

As for Japundit, Edward may have reverted it to a blog format, but its
purpose is still to highlight interesting news from Japan. It's a
group blog, so if you'd like to contribute short pointer posts to your
own or other content, I'm sure he'd love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Nick.

P.S. I'm amazed this Google Group still exists!

Google Groups never go away. They're similar to Hotmail accounts. You
completely forget about them until you need it for some completely
unrelated reason (like logging into an MSDN account to download a
Visual Studio update) :P
