Japanese police searching for a missing woman found nine
dismembered bodies hidden in the apartment of a man who may be
connected to her disappearance.

Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, was arrested on Monday after he
allegedly confessed to killing a person, cutting the victim up
and then hiding the body parts in his Zama City, Kanagawa
Prefecture apartment.

According to CNN, Shiraishi told police the human remains were
stored in a cooler "with cat litter in order to hide the
evidence."

Local media outlet TV Asahi reported that three coolers and five
containers were found in the apartment and they each contained
various body parts, including heads and bones.

"There is no doubt that I tried to hide the body of the person I
killed," he allegedly told police, according to Kyodo News. "I
dismembered it at the bathroom, disposing of some body parts in
the garage."

The bodies were reportedly of eight women and one man. Police
have not revealed the identities or ages of the victims.

It has not been revealed if Shiraishi is being charged in
connection with all of the bodies found or just the one victim
he allegedly confessed to killing.

Authorities were initially investigating Shiraishi after a 23-
year-old woman vanished last week in Tokyo.

Police said the woman was reported missing after she posted a
message online seeking someone to commit suicide with her.

Kyodo News reports that the woman's brother logged into her
social media account and found she had been communicating with
Shiraishi.

Surveillance video from a train station showed Shiraishi and the
woman walking together near his apartment.
