Interesting thing to note about the "Wall of Jericho"

episode, "Dance like you want to win!" Asuka and Shinji are doing that
dancing stuff to practice for the operation against the angel that
split in half. Well the night before the operation, Misato tells
Shinji that she wont be back that night, work or something, and when
Asuka finds out, she moves her futon into Misato's room and turns
around, tells Shinji, "This is the impenetrable wall of Jericho third
child, cross it, and you die, now lets go to sleep."
-First of all, the Wall of Jericho is talked about in Jewish folklore,
or something like that. So like most of the other religion-derived
stuff in Eva, I think this might be important too.
-The Wall of Jericho was some impenetrable wall which Israelite troops
had to get over to kill some people in Jericho. The wall (Yep, you
guessed it) fell down after the troops walked around the city seven
times or something.
I think that Asuka's mention of a wall of Jericho between her and
Shinji foreshadows the inevitable collapse of that wall. Assuming that
EoE is when Asuka's Jericho wall collapses, I dont think there is any
point between this episode and EoE where Shinji 'marches around her
seven times' but what is important is she said Wall of Jericho, not
like, Great Wall of China or something. Why? Because the Wall of
Jericho collapses in the end.
I know that the Great Wall of China has had parts fall down over the
years, but it is still standing, today.
And I just thought of a cool argument, why didnt Anno have Asuka say,
"Berin Wall?" Besides superficial reasons, like Wall of Jericho sounds
cooler (And makes Asuka sound more educated, which she is since she
has graduated college) when the Berlin Wall was taken down, it was
taken down in unison, both sides agreed to take it down, and then
after, both sides, east and west Germans came and greeted each other.
With the Wall of Jericho though, the Wall of Jericho was taken down by
Joshua, and the city of Jericho was conquered by Joshua, so, if Joshua
was meant to be represented by Shinji, then you could say that the use
of the Wall of Jericho foreshadows Shinji finally getting control over
Asuka, or maybe it foreshadows the falling of Asuka's facade of being
strong and masculin, and she can now love someone.

my penchant for overanalyzing the mythical referents in Eva (I am not eh
only person guilty of that, of course :)) However, I have also heard that
that line occurs in an old American movie from the 30's. I don't know which
is the "correct" interpretation.

I think you are over analyzing the situation. She didn't use the Great
Wall of china because it's not impenetrable!

*sighs*
Berlin wall being taken down in union would be the very reason she
would not use it! She is defending herself from Shinji. Trying to get
away! If you must look deep into this then look no further then the
morning where they would have to start acting the same again!

Ahhh, I dunno, I just thought that, if they put enough thought to have
Asuka call the paper-door divider in the room the "Wall of Jericho" I
just thought that there would have been more symbolism and
significance behind it. Why not just say, "Cross this door, and I'll
kick your @$$ Third Children!" That would have seemed Asuka-like as
well.

Well, first, "Child" would be the proper grammar. Second, she is a
university student, her choice of words is probably the result of an
advanced vocabulary!

I assume this is a reference to the use of grammar? Just for the
record, Asuka's use of both terms was correct in the context that she
used them!

Wow! Ok I am really surprised by this. You are actually admitting
that the use of "Children" is correct within the context of the series?
When I read your first post in this thread I though I was going to
have to wade in again, in my self-righteous way, defending Anno's
use of "Children" as correct within the context of the series. But it
seems I don't have to anymore... WoW! How long did we argue
over that one ^_^

We argued until I got tired! Then I talked to the guy who translated
it and he told me that I was in fact correct and that all this crap
about calling it Children is just that, crap! So get over it! The
context in which Asuka used "Children" in the Dub at that one point
was correct yes! At no point have I ever said that "Children" is a
non-word!

Yep, the movie is called "It Happened One Night." The actual scene in
which the line "Wall of Jericho" is used is somewhat similar to the
context in Evangelion. Like the Shinji-Asuka dynamic early in the
series, the movie is a romantic comedy. You can find out more about
the plot here (www.filmsite.org) but basically the two characters end
up in a one-room hotel. As this is the 30s, and the two are playing
"hard to get" Clark Gable's character puts up a wall between the
double beds. The following is taken from the description at
www.filmsite.org:

the film, he divides their twin-bedded bedroom into two parts by
stringing up a clothesline. Then, as he drapes a blanket over the line
between their beds, she dryly observes: "That, I suppose, makes

respect. Prying eyes annoy me. Behold the walls of Jericho! Uh, maybe

Peter reassures her that he does not have a trumpet like Joshua did in

Why Anno would know about an American movie made in 1934, no matter
how popular, is beyond me. I suppose it's use could be interpreted
symbolically, but I think Anno's vision of their relationship became
much darker as the series went on, and so comparisons to the American
film classic and Evangelion become less feasible, especially when one
considers the happy ending "It Happened One Night" is given.
