I'm considering getting the newly remastered Evangelion Renewal DVDs
from Japan, mostly because what's been released in the states was
poorly done. The most bothering effects were the constant jitter
alongside drawn lines (aliasing artifacts? seen in Manga's release of
the two films when pausing or going frame-by-frame).

I'm not refering to the screen jitter when transitioning from one cut
to another, and the movies didn't have them in the first place,
although I heard that was also fixed.

To those who've seen this new DVD edition, is the line jitter still
present?

Keep in mind 2 things:
1) The new Japanese Evagelion Renewal DVDs don't include the two movies,
just the 26 TV episodes.
2) They also don't have English subtitles.

I've never seen the Renewal DVDs, but I understand that their main selling
points are reduced jitter, enhanced colors, and an entirely remixed audio
track. If this problem you're describing was extant in the TV series as
well, I don't know if they fixed it.

Personally, I think that poor DVD encoding can contribute to errors in
animation, and that the MPEG standard lends itself better to live-action.
But I only have circumstantial evidence to back that up.

On a related note, I don't think the Director's Cut DVDs coming out in the
US now were made from the Renewal masters, although ADV has certainly
improved things over their original release. On the other hand, I thought
their new subtitle translations were horrible.

The Renewal project includes ALL of Evangelion: 01-08 DVDs have the TV
episodes, the old broadcast version and the newly remastered episodes.
DVD 09, although not labeled as such has the two movies, remastered,
anamorphic, etc. all that good stuff.

Sorry about that. A quick check at http://www.cdjapan.co.jp shows you're
right, although they're not selling the special edition box anymore.
Amazon.co.jp appears to still be, although I don't know the Japanese for
"out of stock" :).

Also of interest on CDJapan, coming in June:
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KIBA-1013

"Comprised of animated sequences from Sega Saturn's "Neon Genesis
Evangelion" game. This fast-paced, quality anime has been newly edited from
animated sequences from the Sega Saturn game based on the cult anime show,
and includes the song "Ai no Evangelion" performed by Hikari Horaki."

The special box set was sold out a long time ago. It was released in a
limited number and it sold like hotcakes. But then again, I don't but
DVDs for the box. inside.

I prefer cdjapan.com over amazon.jp since amazon.jp doesn't translate
everything in English. The only problem with cdjapan is that they take
forever to ship.
