Gendou - Ano's father or Ano himself?

Here's a question to ponder -

Do you think that Gendou was supposed to represent Ano's father, or Ano
himself? Or maybe both?

I always interpreted it as Shinji = Anno when he was depressed, with
Asuka and Rei comprising the other aspects of his personality at
different times in his life. Not unlike the MAGI. ;)

As for Gendo.. hmmm, dunno..
