Rei is the First Child. Shinji is the Second Child. Asuka is the Third
Child.

Rei is the First Child, Asuka the Second and Shinji the Third. Touji
is the Fourth, and Kaoru the Fifth.

*EEEEENNNH* Wrong, Rei is the first child. Asuka the second and Shinji the
third. Followed by Touji the fourth and Kaoru the fifth.

Actually don't listen to anyone in this thread at all.
They are all wrong so far.

Rei is the First Children.
Asuka is the Second Children.
Shinji is the Third Children.
Touji is the Fourth Children.
Kaoru is the Fifth Children.

There is no such thing as a "Child" title designating
a pilot in the original Japanese version of Evangelion.
They use the English word "Children" and they use it
on purpose (ie it is not a mistake).

They incorrectly changed it to Child in the dub, hence why
so many people get it wrong. It is written as "Child" in all of
ADVs Eva related material as well.

That is the theory, but no there has never been an
"official explanation" given as far as I know. It is
known however that the use of the English term
"Children" was intended, and there was meaning
behind it.

On the flip side of Death and rebirth: they (the narrators ir the
voice of rei and a couple of other members) indicate that ist is a
translation issue.

If I remeber what little jap[anese I know there are situations where
there either is no singular form of the verb or no plural form of the
verb.

The same thing applies to tense for verbs (in some cases there is no
past present future tense as we understand it) and as a result Child
and Children become one in the same.

You mean the _US_ voice-actors? I wouldn't expect them to go against
the translator's decisions, or even to know anything about that. ^^;

"Situations"? There's no singular or plural forms at all. ^_^;

Amanda Winn Lee stated a number of times in that commentary
that she changed things just because she wanted to. Added whole
lines in because she thought they sounded better. She made Shinji
say Fuck, she makes Misato say Fuck (in EoE at least, or so I've
heard from people who have seen it at cons) she stuffs up Miasto's
explanation about to Shinji about Adam and Lilith (Adam was _not_
born from Lilith). Overall I have a number of issues with the
translation. This one in particular though is more a follow on from
Matt Greenfield's work on the series for ADV.

Olivier addressed the correctness of this statement in his post. I
just want to point out though that whether the Japanese word
is plural or not is irrelevant. In the original Japanese they didn't
use the Japanese word, they said the English word "Children".
The Japanese Voice Actors were told to say the English word
Children when referring to the pilots. First Children, Second
Children, Third Children, etc... There was no need to "translate"
anything.

Uh no. Rei is the 1st, then Asuka, then Shinji then Toji and then Tabris.

That is so not the case with the context being used here Michael
