A new look at Asuka

So my friend, who is not the biggest Eva-fan, decided that Asuka needed
to be "more black." I'll let you take that however you will, just don't
take it the wrong way. So, I present to you, "Eva-remix":

Again, I didn't make this image... although, incidentally, I did try to
colorize it unsuccessfully. Is there an easy way to give sketches a more
polished look using GIMP/Photoshop? I have no intrinsic artistic talent.
