The part that keeps tripping me up is when Rei appears in ..forgive me if
this isn't the right place it has been awhile since I watched the
series....terminal dogma where she aparantly created an AT Field that
rivaled Gendou sp? and he looks at her and says something like I see... or I
know you.......... That part has really stumped me, because if she was an
angel then absorbing Adam should have triggered the third Impact without
having anything to do with Shinji.... or have I just copletely missed the
point of that scene??????

No, not completely. You understood this scene right, but you have
completely missed the point of a scene *before*.

| Kaoru: You are, the First Children?
| Ayanami Rei.....
| You are the same as me.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
| Rei: Who are you?

Kaoru knows exactly what's going on. No, not exactly, as he realizes in
the end - but he knows much more than most of the others do.

Both are partly Angels and partly humans. That *might* be the reason.
I even think both were created by man.

The more interesting question is: what would have happened if Kaoru had
triggered the Third Impact? It is IMHO very possible that SEELE (or only
Keel?) would have "won" in this scenario and have some influence on it.

There is only one argument against: if SEELE would have wanted this, why
didn't they tell him where Adam is? Are they stupid? But in one of the
added scenes - IIRC, correct me if I'm wrong - they did. Kaoru is told
that Adam is in Gendou's hand. Kaoru misunderstood this and thought Adam
is under Gendou's control - the right interpretation is, however, the
literal one.

So one could conclude that:

- SEELE wanted to trigger Third Impact under their control using Kaoru.
- Gendou wanted to trigger Third Impact under his control using Rei.

Clearly the first scenario didn't happen. The second one *could* be the
one of 25, 26 - I don't see anything against. In EoE, however, none of
them happened: Gendou's plan was crossed by Rei.

Granted I agree with your summation, I guess what has always stumped me is
that since Karou is an Angel he was able to completly sync with the Eva's
and Rei is always having problems sync'ing with Eva's (ie the sync ratio
with respect to Shinji and Asuko before she broke down) but the statement
made when she entered Central Dogma was that another AT Field had shown up
as powerful as Karou, so was it something I missed or did she just discover
her own AT Field abilities as Karou hinted at. This is probably the only
continuity problem that has evaded me, not that there are not others but
this is the one the I just can't wrap my head around.

And thanks about the supercede statement, new to ng as this is what this
question has driven me to hehehe.

It really depends on your definition of "Angel".

If by Angel you mean "Child of Adam", then no, Rei is in no way
an Angel, she has a cloned human body and the soul of the progenitor
of Humanity.

If by Angel you mean a member of SEELE's list, that encompasses
Adam, Lilith, Humanity and "The Angels", then sure, she is an Angel,
along with Shinji, and Misato, and Asuka and everyone and everything
else we see in the series.

So just to restate. She has a human body and the soul of a source of
life. Whether that makes her an Angel depends on your definition of
that term. Within Eva itself that both definitions are used at different
times.

Could you please mark spoilers and semi-spoilers? I haven't seen anything
except for the first 4 episodes! Thx

Stop reading now as almost everything here is "spoiling". Watch the series,
then come back.

Um. I can try. You do realise though that Eva first screened in Japan
seven and a bit years ago. There is so much in Eva that can be spoiled,
and I can't stress enough how much you should avoid being spoiled.
Rei's origins were one of the best surprises in the show. Don't let other
such things be ruined for you.

Rei was an angel, she returned to Lilith to return all of humanity to lilith
as one. Cm Ikari had her for many purposes, to hold Yui close to him and
for the purpose of beginning the events leading to the 3rd impact.
