Hi guys,

Been reading this group for the past days now and I guess its about time
to dump something in here.. First of all I got a question which I can't
seem to solve on my own. I'm quite a fan of the series and last year I
also started collecting NGE pictures, which turned into a nice
collection.

Recently I stumbled upon a picture of Rei (which is my absolute favorite
at the moment) in which she's busy with (as I like to describe it:) the
re-shaping of the world. However, I got 2 identical ones; one (full
size) with a grey colour streak, the other in full red. Now, my *guess*
is that the grey one is real and the red one is a simple "redo" but I'd
like to be sure.. Could you help me out here? Thanks in advance.

http://www.catslair.org/rei-red.jpg (43kB)
http://www.catslair.org/rei-grey.jpg (158kB)

I find the serie very intruiging (I got the 'Perfect Collection' boxed
DVD set + Death/Rebirth & EoE) and like them all. Most of the people I
talk with find the last 2 episodes in the serie dissapointing but I
don't share that opinion. Its different, very abstract, but most
certainly not "too simple". In fact; I think its an absolute valuable
addition to the whole experience since it reveals a LOT of details and
answers a lot of answers.

What I find most interesting is that in some cases the English voice
characters seem to do a better job that the others (including the
Japanese ones). For example; I've been replaying the scene in "Asuka
Strikes!" a couple of times now in where she syncs with the EVA during
the start sequence. When using the English language her German is almost
fluent while the other languages are making it really hard to believe
she's actually a German girl :-) At least its a re-assuring idea that
they seem to have picked out a good selection of voice actors for the
job.

And getting on with Asuka.. I agree with most people that she's an
arrogant bitch, but I also believe that there is way more to her than
most seem to realize. For starters; she's not dumb but also quite good
in the things she does. In fact; I think that the only thing keeping her
back is her self-pride and arrogance as well as her mental problems.

I also wonder if she didn't have much more influence in the whole 3rd
impact than most people realize.. I will probably have to watch EoE and
the last two episodes some more times but I keep wondering if Shinji's
driving motivation for the things he did wasn't actually Asuka's doing..

When Unit 1 becomes a 'god' we see Shinji seeking contact with Asuka.
I'm not sure but I think thats not some memory but some sort of
mindlink. Shinji being desperate seeks out for Asuka's help and since he
is in control of a 'god' it would make perfect sense (at least to me)
that he can contact her in this way.

After that doesn't work out he feels that everyone can just die.. EOT.
Only after everyone is joined Shinji seems to realize the meaning of
Asuka's words; he is running away from the truth and reality.

And now I'm wondering... Couldn't he have a perfect live with Rei's
company *if* he wouldn't be haunted by the harsh words of Asuka ?
Couldn't it be that the more he experiences the peace of the moment with
Rei he keeps thinking back of Asuka ? And maybe, wouldn't it be
possible that his only motivation in realizing that it was 'wrong' were
Asuka's words reminding him of how he always ran away from things when
it got a bit harder?

With that in mind I think Asuka may have had much more influence in
Shinji's decision to do the things he did. I also think this is somewhat
re-affirmed by the ending scene's; Shinji strangleing Asuka simply
because he's quite upset with her..

Anyway, thats how I look at it.. at least for now.

Thanks in advance for any comments concerning the pictures.

Hi, I'm helpin' you only about the pictures ;)
First of all, the second link dowsn't work because the right one
ends with ...rei-gray.jpg, however, I think the original picture is the red
one.
As you can see in the right bottom corner (about 250*250 pixels)
of the gray version, there is a pattern mirroring/replication, usually
obtainable using softwares like Photoshop (filter's name is Clouds
or somewhat like that).

First one's the original picture. It's a CD-cover.

Welcome to the group. Place can always use more new blood (only been
here 6 months or so myself).

Well, it seems pretty clear that Asuka is involved to me, but I wouldn't
call it a mind-link or anything of the sort. I think it's more that
Shinji's decision to finally manifest his true feelings to her, and the
fact that she, more than Rei or Misato or anyone else, is foremost in
his mind, that makes him do the things he does. I don't really see her
having much of an active role in Third Impact, but rather a reactionary
one based on Shinji's advances towards her.

Clear as mud.

Yeah, thats a bit stupid of me; typo'ed. Called the file 'gray' instead
of 'grey', but its fixed now.

Indeed... Now that you mentioned it and I looked *much* closer...

Hmm, IMO they still did a nice job but alas.. Thanks!

Thanks, thats even more than I asked for.. Now, not to push it but...
You wouldn't happen to know the title to that CD from mind? ;)

I won't address that part since it's already been answered. Welcome!

Well, in this case, Tiffany Grant, Asuka's American dub actress, IS fluent
in German. I've heard that she was able to improv more German into parts
where Asuka's speaking in German (like the telephone call from her
stepmother).

However, I'm a big fan of both the American AND the Japanese voices. There
are some definite times I prefer one to the other--Kaworu's japanese voice
is EASILY far and above his American voice IMO. But I LOVE Kaji's American
voice.

Oh, it's nice to see an Asuka fan. ^_^ We've had a lot of Rei-obsessing the
last few months, which almost always leads to Asuka-bashing, and I LOVE
Asuka.

Hmm. It's kind've a general consensus that those scenes in EoE are played
out in Shinji's mind. But I think it's well worth noting that, by EoE, he
feels the only person he can reach out to is Asuka. But I'm a definite A/S
shipper. R/S is just...ehh, IMO. (Can you say "incest?")

I'd really like to say a bit more, but I'll have to get back on that one.
It's play week and I need sleep. ^_^;;

Where did the expression 'shipper' come from, anyway? I've only heard it
used once before, by a friend who was an X-Files shipper for Mulder and
Scully and I thought it was indigenous to them.

What show, perchance? You need this:

IIRC, that would be art from the End of Evangelion OST.

Y'know, I honestly have NO idea. On the Harry Potter for Grownups mailing
list, theories get "ships" in Theory Bay, including couple theories, so that
kind've makes sense... I'm not an X-Files fan, so I know it's not contained
to them. But, really, I just don't know. ^_^;;

*chuckles* Steel Magnolias. Performances Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday,
auditions for musical Thursday, and then we're leaving for state competition
with the play on Friday. And I was sick all last weekend. :P

Thanks.. Well, happy to be here ;-)

I see its a mixture if basicly every possible type of fan which you can
imagine which basicly makes up a good newsgroup IMO.

> Well, it seems pretty clear that Asuka is involved to me, but I wouldn't

More like a memory I guess ?

I did find it a little odd that, after Unit1 became the tree of life, it
quickly shifted to that conversation.

Also makes perfectly sense... Thats what I really like about the series
(even though some seem to hate this): they leave a lot open for personal
opinion and impression. When something is missing it always manages to
complete it better than anything else can. Take a book... You have to
picture a lot yourself by imagination, which is what makes a book very
appealing to people.

Same here.. There are a lot of mysteries and everyone looks at those in
a different way :)

Absolutely... I also noticed that. Or what about her first day in
school ? "Gutenmorgen Shinji" (I loved that scene). That really
sounded very good..

But this really sheds some more light on the issue..

Yeah... I hope I didn't give out the (wrong) impression that I
considered the US voices to be the best around because thats not what I
intended..

I have to admit not having listened to the Japanese dub enough to form a
good opinion on it. The things which I did hear (mostly focusing on
sound than wording since my knowledge of the Japanese language is
"moderate" but not good enough to pick everything up) was that some
things pitched in quite nicely.

Well... I'm afraid I'm somewhat in between.. Personally I don't really
like Asuka but I have grave respect for the things she manages to pull
off. For example: My knowledge of the German language is quite decent
(I'm a neighbor so not that hard). I started studying Japanese for quite
a while now and can relate to the situation in that I understand a lot
of the differences between both languages.

Then you only need to check how far she could have been by her Japanese
study and _then_ picture thinking in that foreign language to actually
pilot an Eva (which is a task on its own IMO). IMVHO that sight is
impressive.

As for Rei... She's cute IMO, also intruiging but well... There's a
bit too much left out for my liking. I always get this feeling about
that old saying (I hope it also goes in English): "Still waters, deep
bottoms" (litterally translated). Or rather: "There's more which meets
the eye", but the filling in of 'more' is left to the public.

That may be true but (not willing to quote the Matrix) how would you
define real ? Especially when you're basicly in control of a God (or
rather: Godlike entity) without: 1) Knowing it. 2) Knowing how to
control it.

What also makes me wonder is the conversation itself. Shinji is quite at
a loss but I can't think of a moment in the serie where this
conversation would have taken place. And if this is a memory fragment it
should have been in here since we saw Asuka move in.

hehehe :-)

I dunno... I can relate to both situations myself, its pretty clear
that Rei has a weakness for Shinji (understatement IMO) :)

Tiffany Grant remains a huge Eva fan, and is married to one of the
producers working on the new live-action Eva-film. She's also known to
cosplay her chararacter at conventions -- look around the ADV website
for a video of this.

In English, you say, "Still waters run deep." Although I always add the
qualifier "...but sometimes they're just plain stagnant."

Oh, and add me to the Asuka-fan camp.
