I've just recently discovered anime and I wanted to start a collection.
Any suggestions for "must have" DVDs?

In addition to the items already suggested I'd add Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki
(the original 13 ep series), Tenchi Universe,
Tenchi Muyo in Love and Daughter of Darkness. Pass on Tenchi in Tokyo and
Tenchi in Love 2 (aka Tenchi Forever).

Rurouni Kenshin is good too, though the series animation is somewhat dated.
The first two OAVs are awe inspiring though, especially if you know the
characters.

Kyuketsuuki Miyu/Vampire Princess Miyu too... also dated, but good.

Noir, good story, great soundtrack.

Trigun
Ghost in the Shell

Z

I did include Akira! Also, Check out Excel Saga, and watch it with the
vid-notes(c) activated. You can learn a lot about anime and manga fandom
from the show that way.

Vaughn L.Porter
Get a PS2 and check out Squaresoft's fine line
of RPGs.
