Seeing as how I've been missing in action for the past couple of
months, I thought some people might be interested in knowing who's on
my shitlist since the last time I posted. Here's the list of banned
domains/IPs

[IP-ACCESS]
IP1=D,*.swbell.net
IP2=D,24.77.61.176
IP3=D,ps64.putney.com
IP4=D,*.ap.sissa.it
IP5=D,*.verizon.net
IP6=D,*.KSCABLE.COM
IP7=D,*.fullsail.com
IP8=D,*.codetel.net.*
IP9=D,*dialup.mindspring.co
IP10=D,*weise.germany.net
IP11=D,*.arnet.net.ar
IP12=D,193.61.213.130
IP13=D,*.sjcsf.edu
IP14=D,*.europeonline.net
IP15=D,*.unimelb.edu*.*
IP16=D,*.wku.edu
IP17=D,*.ihug.*
IP18=D,*rice.edu*
IP19=D,170.18.*.*
IP20=D,*?bradley.dialup.earthlink.net
IP21=D,*dialup.tiscalinet.it
IP22=D,*.btinternet.com
IP23=D,*.netvigator.com
IP24=D,*.ihug.com.au
IP25=D,207.212.240.*
IP26=D,203.164.47.100
IP27=D,193.136.120.*
IP28=D,200.31.8.*
IP29=D,193.60.171.184

The bans are always added to the top first, so IP1 is the newest ban.
As a matter of fact, the first IP is banned because the dumbass user
from that net doesn't know how to setup a fscking FTP client. How hard
is it to set retries to 45-75 seconds? Do you _REALLY_ think that in
the time you're waiting for a retry that someone is going to connect?
My god people, it's not that damn serious. It's not like my connection
is going anywhere any time soon. If you really feel the need to hammer
the life out of something, please spend your time flooding fserves on
IRC instead of making me waste my time banning you, as well as making
my FTP server block your connection attempt. The FTP server is set to
block anyone who tries to connect more than 4 times in 30 seconds for
5 minutes. 4 times in 30 seconds is 7.5 seconds between retries on the
average. You know, some servers ban you permanently for 2 retries in 1
minute.

With all that said, I'd like to shift gears a bit... I'd like to thank
those users that have given back and uploaded stuff over the past few
months. You know who you are. I hope to get yet another (or two) 60
gig drive(s) in to replace my old 12 and 45 gig'ers that have been in
this comp for some 2-3 years. I'm also in the market for a new
connection. It seems that frame relay T1s are becoming very
inexpensive (I've seen some at ~125$/mon). It sounds fairly steep to
some, but considering that 3mbps/768kbps from my current ISP will cost
something like 82$/mon, I much better get a non-capped 10mbps line
(which some FR companies do provide). Wish me well in my hunt for the
uber-connection...

LOL. What were these two for? The first is my uni, the second is on my
ISP...

That reminds me.... Did I end up uploading the redone eps? Been so long
I can't remember now....

..........Can you explain to me why it's really important not to have
people try more then once to connect in a short period of time? It's just
a few bytes of data isn't it?

Yeah, ihug users seem to be extremely dense. For some reason or
another, they don't seem to understand that using 2 logins from the
same ip results in automatic ban. The first time, someone did it, I
banned the ISP. Someone then requested a removal of the ban because
they were on the same ISP (I believe it was TerraStrife). I removed
it, and some other lamer from the same ISP (I know it wasn't Terra
because I msg'd him at the time of it happening and requested his ip).
So, until otherwise stated, that ban is perm.

Disaster, ever hear of DoS/DDoS attacks? If 300 people all try to
connect at the same time (one of the many signs of a DoS attack) more
than once, it could possibly interrupt my network connection. Here's a
hypothetical situation:

a.) 300 users try to open up a connection to port XYZ on my computer.
b.) My computer refuses the connection 300 times.
c.) 300 users try to connect again, 1 second later.
d.) My computer refuses 300 times.
e.) 300 users try to connect
f.) My computer refuses connection.
and so on...

Doing this sort of thing over extended periods of time produces two
problems:

1.) If someone gets dropped, then one person gets accepted, and 299
denials are sent. So now, the cycle repeats with 299
connections/connection refused stages. This leads into the second...

2.) My computer spends more time refusing connections than it does
sending data, which drops the transfer rate of other clients, as well
as possibly dropping my network connection if the flooding is dramatic
(for example, 1,000 machines).

It seems a bit paranoid, but, if I posted some of my firewall logs,
you'd be surprised how many Nimda, SubSeven, Brown Orifice, and
god-knows-what-else connection attempts I get a day (last count was
something like 3,000 / day). There are countless morons out there that
have all sorts of trojans, virii, etc. on their computers without
knowing. I rather not have ftp users flooding my connection. I think
it's a fair request considering the facts:

1.) The ftp service is on 24/7, unless I need the bandwidth for an
upload to a friend, or I need to reboot.

2.) See #1. Also, the server is provided free of charge (ratio or
otherwise).

3.) I host files that could be acquired elsewhere, yet everyone
decides that they want to get them from me.

Whenever someone runs a server free of charge, there are rules to be
followed. Most of the time, those rules are fair and just. I think my
ftp rules are such. I can't find a link to one of my older rules
posts, so I'll have to post it yet again. Oh well. I just pray that
some people will get a clue before I just kill the eva accounts and
start with something new.

Yeah, now if I can find a provider in my area that doesn't need 600$
to install the damn lines...

You can set a permission for a specific IP through a general one that has
been banned can't you? Or perhaps set up a specific account that would run
through the ban with a different login and pass? Been a while since I have
run a server and I was never really that good at it anyhow. I did do some
nifty things though! :D

[Snip hypothetical situation]

Ah, yes I see!

Yup I see it now! I didn't consider that at first. Stuck in my perfect
world I guess! You know, where everyone is nice and considerate. Okay so
it's not MY perfect world.

I remember when those kinds of services cost thousands of dollars. Not
having watched the price myself, $600 seems like a hell of a deal.
