We all know that I am a Rei fan. We All know that I enjoy Rei and Shinji
pairings. What you don't know is that I also believe that for Rei to be an
entertaining love interest, she has to be played out of character.

That's right, original Rei and original Shinji are boring as hell where it
comes to romances. The fic "The one I love is..." is a great fic but plays
Rei so far out of character that she acquires some of the aggressive
personality that attracts us to Asuka in the first place.

Whilst I put my vote in for Rei/Shinji pairings, I also know that in my
heart, Rei has to become a little more like Asuka in certain regards for
it to work. Mind you I'm not saying that Rei has to be exactly like Asuka
or even terribly close. She just has to pick up that element of excitement
that comes with an outspoken or aggressive personality.

The Rei in "The one I love is..." was not like Asuka at all in the over
all picture. But she had picked up those qualities in Asuka that make so
many people vote for Asuka/Shinji fics.

That, is the truth.

Yes. The Truth hurts, doesn't it? Oh, sure, maybe not as much as jumping on
a bicycle with the seat missing, but it still hurts.

Truthfully, Asuka also needs to be more like Rei
for any romance with Shinji to work.
I have NO idea what to do with Shinji, however.

.....Yeah. That would hurt more!

Well Asuka would have to slow down a bit to realize that Shinji is there
yes and her focus would have to leave herself for at least a few moments a
day.

Personally I think Rei is more suited for Gendo.

True...Very true. But fanfics like Two Hearts of One Mind seem to show a
different way for a Shinji/Rei pairing to work. IIRC, Rei picks up emotions
from Shinji, and as it turns out...Rei just could never really show emotion
before Shinji changed her. I wouldn't really say that Rei picked up any traits
from Asuka because the traits in Asuka could be present in other characters of
the story. If you really think about it, Asuka and Misato basically give off
the same kind of vibe. Except Asuka chooses to be angry while Misato makes it
fun.

I will agree though. When writing a Shinji/Rei fanfic, you do have to make a
few adjustments to their personalities and that may seem a little OOC, but it
needs to be done to make it work. To make it romantic. To make it sensible.

Respectfully, I say 'bullpucky'.

The problem is NOT Rei's personality,. it's Shinji's. ("Bad
Shinji," he says, following an idea from an earlier thread
and swatting him in the nose with a rolled up newspaper.)
Rei - or at least, Rei III - has a strong enough will, and
all the Rei's have a subtle sense of humor. Shinji just
doesn't appreciate her enough - being overwhelmed by Asuka's
personality, and experiments in thermodynamics - to realize
that with Rei he'd be safe from the Hedgehog Principle.

Bad Shinji (swats him again)

Although, given Rei's mix of genes (Yui and Lilith), you
do have to wonder about what sort of children she and
Shinji might have...

(Shinji burst into the maternity room. Rei, looking drawn
and even paler than normal (if that's possible) was sitting
up in bed holding a blanket wrapped bundle.

Shinji: Is that...?
Rei: Hai. (she held the bundle up to him.) Your
daughter.

Shinji reached out a trembling hand and lifted the
flap of the blanket so he could see the child's face.
His jaw dropped. His face paled. Then his eyes
rolled up in his head and he sank to the floor.

Rei peered over the edge of her bed at the collapsed
heap, then turned his attention back to her child.

Rei (to the bundle): He will need some time to adjust.

Chibi-Eva-00 blinked her one eye at her, then burped.)

[Snip bad rendition of mini-fic]

Don't become a writer okay? I don't wanna read the rest of that! :P

Your idea is good, apart from the fact that many Asuka/Shinji fics seem to
manage the characters romance without going OOC. so that kind of destorys
your theory I guess.

It's because you are hampered by sanity! I gave that
