Adam: What the hell happened to him???

Okay, so the original Angel-Adam was shrunk and kept somewhere in NERV in a
box. Shinji is the new Adam (maybe, although there's a lot of crucifix
imagery).

What happened to the old Adam in End of Evangelion?

I'm wondering if Adam wasn't actually stored inside Rei or something. It'd
be a cool hiding place and maybe explain why she's so special (other than
the fact she's a clone probably made out of bits of Lilith). It would also
explain what Gendo was reaching for inside Rei (i.e. to get Adam) and why
Rei needed to merge with Lilith before Lilith could merge with the new Adam.

Am I talking complete rubbish?

Any ideas?

Adam was shrunk and then merged into Gendos hands.

Rei is a Clone of Yui with the soul of lilith. Tabris is the possesor of
the soul of Adam.

I've always wondered what the evidence is of Tabris having Adam's soul, besides
the fact that Kaworu appears in EoE despite already having his head squeezed
off.

Apparently it becomes obvious when SEELE tells him that he has the soul of
Adam. It was in a scene that I never saw so go look it up for yourself.
