Smashburger was founded in 2007 by two seasoned fast food industry veterans. Rich Schaden was a former Quiznos owner, and Tom Ryan had previously worked for Pizza Hut on the development of the stuffed crust pizza concept before becoming McDonald's chief concept officer. The two founded the company with the help of the private equity firm Consumer Capital Partners.The restaurant was created to draw attention to the increased demand for hamburgers as part of a trend of "better burger" eateries that includes Shake Shack, which uses similar techniques. Ryan later recalled that the name Smashburger was chosen because it "had this really great hand-crafted connotation, which we do." It also had an organic, earthy, and edgy feel for members of a younger generation.
